NC4X4 Hunting and Fishing

Fontana?

I used to go there and catch some good trout, been trolling on Jocasse last couple of years

No calderwood. There are a lot of good trout lakes around WNC, I usually go to Fontana early in the year before the water turns over and catch them in 0-30’ in water column.

You can catch some big ones middle of the summer deep down but I don’t like dealing with the boat traffic. And this years boat traffic is the worst I’ve ever seen on any lake.

I’ve been wanting to go to jocasse, and watauga to try for some lake trout.

Dads been wanting to go out trolling for trout with me for some time but we couldn’t ever get it worked out. Well today we did and we pounded them all day. 33 in the boat kept two limits. A 20” brown that went three pounds was also nice.

I wish my dad lived close enough to take him fishing. I would make time whenever her wanted to as I know there are not many of those days left. This is a good reminder that I need to call him and see when I can fly him down to do some cat fishing at Santee to see if he can better his all time best from last last year!!

we caught several trout in Jocasse that weighed close to 10lbs, ever seen a 10lb trout that’s only 20” long, they look like footballs, if you ever go we catch them 45-55’ on silver and gold spoons, May and June

I thought about fishing the tournaments they have in winter but didn’t want to go down there never fishing on the lake and paying to get schooled.

I have a cousin that has figured it out, we fished in several tournaments and won 2 and came in 2nd a couple times, some of the locals didn’t like it and not so politely asked us to go back to NC

There are some guys from Tennessee that run a tournament starting in March and runs till September once a month and they try to go to a different lake every time alternating Tennessee and NC best they can. I fished about 1/2 of them last year and got taught a lot but started figuring out a lot of small things that add up to getting a lot of fish. I’ve probably put over 200 trout in the boat this year and really only had one bad day. But there are a few lakes I still can’t get figured out.

It gets kinda addicting to pick apart a lake and find fish in open water that seem to be there for no reason.

Got 3 of 5 cameras placed this weekend then got permission to hunt a box blind that needs new stairs overlooking about an acre of clover on two shooting lanes. Going to throw some 0-24-24 down on the clover and place the cameras up there next week and start working on the new stairs. I’ll probably go in and plant some late season forage mid to late August to mix in with that clover. This area usually holds some nice mature bucks.

Once some bush hogging is done where this weekends cameras were placed, a couple of small game patches will go in there as well.

And pictures of a buck that im almost postive is the same buck from last year that i figured was 1.5 last year, so will be 2.5 this year.

Here’s a good one. Buddy I hunt with has these deer on camera on game lands. The big buck he advertised all last year was taken on game lands by the game warden. Strong chance all these deer are bedding on game land and moving to his private.

That g2 makes it look like a mulie. That's gonna be a nice one this year!

Went to Santee last weekend. Had a great day I Friday. The sand storm haze was really weirdWife had a 40 plus lb cat on and got it to the boat. Was way bigger than my net, I tried to land it, but rolled out And broke line. She looked at me and sad “ get a bigger net” lol. Saturday was to windy until 6 pm so we went out For some night fishing. Fish started Biting around 8pm and look to be a killer night. That was until around 10:15pm when the wind went from 5mph to 50+ mph with no warning in about two minutes. No lighting, no rain, nothing, just wind. IT got serious in a hurry. Wife was near panic, had to cut two drift socks off, 6 rods out when it hit and All tangled and ended up in the prop. made it a cove After taking a 20 minute beating figuring it was just a mater of time before the pontoon was capsized due to the 6’ plus wave height. Waited another 30 minutes in the cove and headed back The 6 miles to dock with still 3’ plus waves. Boat deck was covered with 4” of water about every 4th wave Taking water over the front all the back. Was 1am by the time we got back. Was the worst and scariest time on a boat, and been in some rough waters off shore in my old boat. Wife said she is not going night fishing anymore.
Oh and I now have a really nice Large net with a telescopic 8’ handle!

i was just talking with our plumber sub about fishing down there.... he recalled a similar story about night fishing there. except they ended up beaching/ 1/2 sinking their boat

Hit the river again on the 27th of June with my son and niece. Caught probably 20 cats, a handful of largemouth and a striper. Started off the morning with the first line to hit the water with a 34 pounder on. Was a great day. Pulled about 200lbs of fish by noon. Buddy next to us had two on at once, 36lb and 30lb. Lol

Met up with an old school mate I haven't seen in 30+ years this past Friday and we hit the river. We hauled in some good cats, landed about 15 and lost 3 or 4 nice ones in snags on the bottom and had a few snap lines. Had a great day catching fish and catching up on old times. Largest was 21lbs. Water was low and was up and down all day screwing with the fish. When they ran water, the fish bite would pick up. Soon as they quit running water the bite would stop. It was so predictable. Lol. Good times nonetheless!

Man. Was at Wrightsville this past weekend. Didn’t take the boat to spend more time with family. Best decision I ever made. Caught 2 citation sized flounder off the dock. Lost a big red the first morning. Wrapped me around a piling. Trying to thread him out and leader snapped. Biggest flounder I didn’t get a pic of but had to be 28” plus. Only pic I got of it was dragging it in to let a boy grab him. He took a pic of it belly up and his mom got a pic from the 4th floor. The last morning I caught 1 that was 25”. Got a pic of him. The other was 20 to 21 inches. Trying to get back down there tomorrow and Friday. Took pics of the 25 inch flounder with a tape measure on it, but flounder have to be brought in to be weighed.
