Gone Postal : Mail Jeep Build

Thanks much for the info. I am glad to hear comments about the miller welder. I have my eye on a Miller 211. A bit pricey but I guess one of those 'for life' buys. It'll keep my wife pissed too for awhile so it's kind of the gift that keeps on giving. Peace and quiet to work (she gives me the silent treatment and I just run with it:shaking:) I'll probably have some more questions as you go. The pics are great. I read folks describing things in text and have no idea what the heck they are talking about and then see a pic and have the 'Oh, I get it moment'. I'm really enjoying the postings - good stuff.

i'll keep them coming for sure. it's great to hear everyone's feedback / comments and input. some good, some bad, but it gives me a different point of view. sometimes you get tunnel vision on a project and hearing other thoughts help the project stay on track.

the miller 211 is an awesome welder. really any of the miller 60% duty cycle machines are awesome. i'm sure there are some guys using that model here on the board. i looked at a few of those also (also checked out the hobart ironman 230 - it looks nice also). just be sure you have enough room in your home load center to add a 230volt welder that pulls that many amps. you'll probably need a 35amp breaker for that welder. i think i ran mine with a 30amp 230volt breaker. i went with this model because it wouldn't overwork my home load center. you don't want to burn your house down. the wife would REALLY be pissed then:lol: finding one second hand is the best way to go for a hobby welder like myself. i was able to get a better one for the money and like you say, it's a lifetime purchase.

my girlfriend's dad uses a millermatic 35, which was actually millers first wire feed mig welder. it still runs flawlessly and he's had it for over 30yrs (and it was used when he bought it).

Chad,
Build is going great man, very impressed and looking forward to seeing it drive. You have some talent.
Anywho, I need you to get this :poop: pile done because I know a guy that needs a tire carrier and roll cage built in his jeep.

thanks man!

shoot what are you talking about? it already drives. i can sit on the rusted out floorboards and make motor sounds and turn the steering wheel and shift the imaginary transmission. is that not driving? :driver: hahaha.

get on over to the house and help me finish that pile. i'm sure i can find you something to do. i won't even yell at you for putting dirty tools back in my toolbox. :)

i have some ideas for your tire carrier and rollcage.

Well I coughed up some change today and I ordered my tires from Will at 4wheelparts in Charlotte. Best price I found anywhere...$100s cheaper than anyone on Pirate4x4. I wasn't even planning on buying them until he told me the price. :) I ordered (4) 36x13.50x15 irok bias tires. I originally wanted the 37x14x15 but Will let me know the 36 was actually taller and only .25" narrower. My irok radials on my YJ are 37x12.50x15 (the ones i mounted on my mail jeep to see the stance) and The 36x13.50 is .1" shorter and 1.1" wider than my irok radials. The true diameter of the 36x13.50 is 36.8" AND it was cheaper and taller than the 37x14. I'm super happy. They'll be in this week and i'll pick them up on thursday.

they even offer an NC4x4 discount...for all you guys looking for tires.

tire dimensions for comparison
irok bias
36X13.50-15LT 11.0tread width 36.8dia. 14.50wide 2810 load range
37X14.00-15LT 10.7tread width 36.5dia. 14.71wide 3085 load range

irok radial
37X12.50R15LT 10.5tread width 36.9dia. 13.40wide 2910 load range

Love the build. Only thing I see is that rear shackle angle is mighty steep. With a short, almost vertical shackle and a long, nearly flat spring, you are likely missing out on a lot of travel. However, with as narrow as the they are mounted to that wide axle, you'll probably still get plenty of articulation.

Jeep is looking damn good Chad.

Cody, Thanks man! I'm glad you like the build.

thanks man. i'm planning on the rear shackle angle angling out some once i add the weight of the fuel cell, tool box and possibly spare tire. hopefully the shackle angle will get better with the added weight. i appreciate the input.

i ordered a garage sale high steer arm from poison spyder. they were on sale for $25 so i couldn't beat it. it's an oddball for std jeeps but for mine it's perfect...kinda.

then i got the chop saw out and chopped off one of the 3 steering holes. why they needed 3 holes for rod ends on the left hand side confuses the heck out of me. i still have to hit it with my belt sander.

then i painted my 2nd hand wheels so they'll look good when i get my shiny new tires this week.

i'm on vacation this week so i'm able to work a little bit in the mornings before it gets so damn hot! this morning i set my caster angles and welded up the spring perches for the front axle. i also painted up a grill for the front cowl and put it on (picked it up from pullapart). i also cleaned up the cut edge from the high steer arm i modified and painted it with some gloss black. let the pics begin.

Bad-ass build! Subscribed! This is my 1st post on this site and I think I'm going to like this place!

thanks! i'm glad you like the build. i'm honored that your first post was on my thread. i hope you continue to enjoy the build. i'll have some cool pics up tomorrow.

Hey this is a family site. Don't talk dirty like that.

vacation is a beautiful thing i swear. too bad i'm too poor to travel anywhere. i guess it's because of all my projects that i keep acquiring.

so today was a good day. i'll let the pics show all. :)

then i got my jack out to see the wheel travel. i couldn't get the jack high enough to get the full range of travel. i estimate it could have gone up another 12-14" before everything bottomed out. good enough flex for me.

Baller.:huggy:
Looks like the mail will def. be delivered no matter what the weather, lol.

fyi. i'll be fixing the left side rear fender opening tomorrow. it's all jacked up.

As if this thing isn't already original enough. I've figured out what I think would make it even more bad ass. I think you should chop the top 3 or 4 inches and rake the windsheild back a few more degrees. It looks like it would be fairly easy to do. I think if you cut the tub right below the side windows and went down 4 more inches and cut again it would line right back up. then for the front cut the front of the top out above the windsheild and let let it sit down as low as it can over it. I think it would be sick if you did it.
