Truck weight, tag price

I have a 2000 F 250 7.3, 6 speed, extended cab, short bed, 4wd.

I need to find out what it weighs. I have always bought a 8000 lb tag because I never pulled or hauled. I have finally got the Jeep to the point that I no longer want to drive it on the street.

I never really thought about my truck tag untill several people got busted a few weeks ago leaving the Flats. The trailer I found weighs about 1500 the jeep should be around 4000

My tag comes due in June, I want to make sure I get the right tag for the weight but I don't wanna pay for too much either.

I tried searching on line but couldn't find anything. Anybody out there with a similar truck and knows their weight?
 
I'll tell you this much... there are sweet spots for price at 13k and at 17k. And you've got to be 1k over to get a ticket.
 
A 13k tag is ~$133, the next step up to 14k is ~$197.
This, I have had a 13K tag on my 3/4 and 1 ton for quite a while with no issues. I have hauled heavier a few times, but not often and not been messed with.

I checked the door jam, it says 8800 GVWR. Is that gross weight loaded?

If so then 8800 - 1500 payload ( 3/4 ton truck ) = 7300 + trailer ( 1500 ) + Jeep ( 4000 ) = 11800 so 13K would be perfect.
 
I have a 04 f250 crew cab short bed and a 18 foot deckover and a cherokee and I weighed 14500 when i was weighed on the way to the flats and was almost empty on fuel too and was not loaded up with extra gear etc.

The math doesn't work that way. The 8800 GVWR is dictated by federal limits on class 2 vehicles. That said, 7300# empty sounds like a pretty good guess. That's about what my Dodge weighs.

While I think 11800 is a really low guess, 14.5 sounds high. Did you ever drive over a cat scale to see what the actual weight was? I'll have to go look and see if I can find an old weight ticket with my dodge and cherocar.

That was my weight from the troopers scales lol

a 15,000 tag is $212
...what year and model is your Dodge Shawn? ...I assumed my 2001 conv cab long bed 4wd was 6000 empty

If your over your over it doesn't matter if its the one time you tow two rigs or whatever the case would be you have to have enough weight on your tag to cover whatever it is your towing
 

I know that. Im talking about the trooper saying you are overweight when you are pulling your typical know load. Same jeep same trailer you weighed on the scales. I mean who ( besides the trooper ) says the troopers scales are accurate all the time? Maybe he dropped them last time he put them in his trunk. Not that it matters, just thinking.

Mine's an 03 quad cab long box, 6spd, 4wd. The only diesel pickup I know of that weighs 6k is a CUCV. And they've got channel frames, no A/C, and not.... much of anything else.

CAT scales are usually at truck stops. There's one at the truck stop (Loves?) in Marion just east of the flats. Costs $20.
 
Should just be $11. There is one at startown rd truck stop too.

And that was my point, wonder what actual weight was compared to his axle scales? My 99 qc/lb 4x4 ctd is 7300-7400. Diesel weighs somewhere around 7lb a gallon so that could make a 250lb difference.

Best bet is to weigh your junk together, add 500 and get a tag for that. If it's still well under 13k and you never tow anything else, there's no need to throw away $60-80 a year more.
 
Loaded the pony up and went to my cities mulch dump today for a weight check. They were real cool about it and there was no fee. Dodge cummins mega cab w/camper shell and 3/4 fuel, 22' 9k trailer and Bronco came in at 15240#'s. I'm tagged at 15,000 so will be increasing another 1000 pounds.
 
Add the GVW of truck plus the GVW of the trailer. I.e my 05 F250 is 9,800 lbs plus 18 ft deckover of around 15,600lbs. My tags are for 2,6000 lbs, which keeps me under CDL of 26,001 lbs. My tags were $413! The problem if you get pulled over is not actually being overweight on a particular trailer, its when you don't have enough tags to cover the GVW of the combination. That's when the DMV will tear you a new one.
 
So your saying my tag has to cover 8800 for the truck and 7000 for the trailer even tho the actual combined weight of truck trailer and jeep is less? That means I have ti have a 16000 lb tag to have a set up that weighs around 12000?

I don't think that is correct I got a ticket for my weight not the gvwr. If that's the case how do you decide the gvwr of a homemade trailer?

That is incorrect. You're confusing driver's licenses and tags.

These trucks weigh alot more than most people think. My truck is a 97 dodge 2500 cummins extended cab 2wd and my trailer is a home made 16fter. I hauled a car to the scrap yard the other day and my truck and trailer with a 1/4 tank of fuel EMPTY was 9600lbs. I didn't think it weight that much!!
 
I use a quarry scale near my office to rollover scales. I have a 97 cc powerstroke. Had a 16' equipment trailer with my cruiser, a smoker, spare parts, tools, camping stuff, loaded coolers, and an extra dude in it and my weight was almost 18k. I am tagged at 19k. Several times rolling down the interstate I have had a trooper roll up beside me and hang out. I think he ran my tags and looked at my junk and decided I was good and rolled on.
