You don't have to run historic tags. My 67 Fairlane and 78 f150 have standard first in flight tags and haven't been inspected in over 10 years. My dad's 88 bronco got plates this year with no inspection.
The 30 year thing is just the time when you can also switch to historic tags if you want.
