Next workday is coming up here soon. Talking with Terry today she said we really need to concentrate on Daniel. Her actual e mail will be coming out soon but I am just trying to put it out as soon as I can.

Also working on a few other things. Radio's for some folks when they are on the trails to contact folks about stuff going on out there. Trying to see if we can somehow fund a few more Sheriff's Deputies for the trails on the weekends. And trying to get them on the actually on the trails not just on the roads till 2 am in the mornings.

I'd be interested in what you are thinking on the getting the sheriff's on the trails. I have some thoughts and ideas I'd like to run past you and snappy. Going to try and make this work day but this month and next are jam full of graduations and end of school stuff for my twins.

I'm moving next weekend (bleck!) so unable to attend the workday unfortunately. On the radios, are funds already available to make this happen? I personally think increased policing in some form or fashion by folks who care about the future of the trails is a terrific idea and am willing/able to contribute personally and/or help to raise funds for this effort if it's needed or would be helpful.

The radios are already in the USFS hands. They have a few extra we should be able to sign out with the new host and take on the trails with us. Still working on it.

Awesome!! I think the initiative is great, post up if any specific assistance is needed to make it all happen!

The deputy's have been invited for ride-a-longs in the past. They've not been interested. They don't like the idea of leaving their vehicle and other equipment behind/ unattended. They have jurisdiction on the roadways but the trail system is outside of their responsibility. If they are away from their vehicles then they cannot respond to calls from the county community which is their primary duty.

Out of curiosity, is this referring to deputies who are specifically associated with the Forest Service (which I suppose would fall into the Ranger category?) or deputies who serve the town/county in more of a general manner?

here is the news from Terry. I might add that we have found a new UTV spider trail on the front side of Daniel by the tree that needs to be blocked.

Hi Everyone – I hope you’re all doing well. The next Volunteer Work Day is Saturday, May 16th!! I won’t be there this month as I’ll be traveling to a trails symposium in OR on Saturday. Joel Hardison will be working with you all for this work day. Jeff Greene & Pete Powell may also help out too.

Here’s the plan for this month. Meet Joel at the Uwharrie Hunt Camp at 9 am and get signed in. Continue with the installation of guardrail on Daniel Trail. These sections have been flagged already by Joel, Darin & myself. These are the sites labeled A & B and the section in-between A & B that is to be slashed in. The guardrails and posts are on site already so once every meets up and gets signed in with Joel you’ll all be able to head out to the Daniel Trail. The slashing in of the ridge line will take folks with winches that can winch trees a ways from the trail and then basically line them along the edge of the trail to make a boundary to indicate where the trail really is.

We have gotten a big supply of our fiberglass / carsonite signs in so I’ll have them ready with the “No Vehicle” signs to be put up behind the slash & guardrail and in the illegal bypasses. We appreciate your help and continued support on the trails.

Bye - Terry

I got to try anyway. Either they go for it or not. I can only try.
I agree and would like to bounce some ideas off you some time soon. Feel free to pm me here or on FB. I'll not be able to make this one yet again. Hopefully next month. Life is really getting in the way of my fun!!!!

Yes it is. Just need to be careful around the work crews out there.

Going to try to make it to my first work day if I can sneak away from the house tomorrow... do I need to bring anything other than some work gloves and boots?

Boots, gloves, eye pro, and water . just your basic stuff really. Thanks for coming out if you can.

I was referring to the Montgomery County deputies. There are no deputies "specifically" associated with the USFS that fall into the "Ranger category". The county has some jurisdiction on the roadways but they have a county to cover... They view the rec area as a federal issue. Not county, not state, it is the USFS.
