I've got a 1988 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0. I busted the stock exhaust on it wheeling a couple weeks back and I removed everything from the header-back. I bought a new exhaust system for it but I really like the way it sounds running just out of the pipe that comes from the header. It's not too loud at idle because I have it turned down to idle around 600. But...my question is...Will it hurt anything running it out of the pipe that comes from the header? It doesn't have a cat or muffler. It's just running out of the pipe that comes from the header. I know it's probably been asked plenty of times but I was just wanting to ask y'all's opinion. Some sites say it will hurt a vehicle others say it won't........Thanks for the help!

i cant imagine it not being loud but if you paint the pipe(with cheap paint) and run it hard a while the paint will burn off some. The rule Ive heard was 12 inches past the line where the paint stopped burning.

Ive been running my zj with 4.0 without exhaust for 2yrs now only thing that should really be a concern is back pressure other than that ive not had any problems... I have a cat still barely hanging on my "pipe from the headers"!

I lied only real concern is babying it when police are around Ive been pulled over 11 times in 9 months and my jeep is somewhat little in comparison to the rednecks diesels in town here:beer::beer:automatics without exhaust is pretty damn loud sounds great out in the woods tho!!!!!!!

throw some tubing on it and save some people's ears, and yourself a headache for the fumes coming up into the cab at really low speeds

i dont no how you have power? i did that with my 4.0 hen i was rebuilding the motor and it cut my power in half, i think you need to have some back pressure in the 4.0 but thats just my opinion

i think you should spare everyone else who you are riding with/by and put some pipes on that junk. No one wants to hear that shit. Do yourself a favor and pipe it so you dont be the guy everyone makes fun of on the trail. It does you no good to have no pipes...all it does is make you loud, obnoxious, annoying, and the punchline for everyone else.

Didn't know I'd get jumped on for asking a question but I have some extra pipe laying around the building that's about 15 or so inches long. Would it quiet it down if I threw that on? I'm not wanting to put the muffler or cat back on. I have about three-four pieces of the piping so it'd be straight piped. It's probably long enough to make it to the back axle. Would that quiet it down? Thanks!

Put a cat on there, don't give the greenies any more ammunition to close our trails

1 - Don't be "that guy" Loud obnoxious exhaust coming from a 6 cylinder isnt cool, you are not fooling anyone into thinking you have a massive V8, it causes noise complaints which can lead to public areas being shut down or you being asked to leave most private wheeling spots.

2 - You could actually be hurting your self in a number of ways. I am not sure about Jeep years, but if that is a F.I. engine and has O2 sensors you need the exhaust system to ensure proper fuel delivery. Next you do not want exhaust fumes sitting under the vehicle, they will creep in and you will get sick as hell, there is a reason all vehicle manufacturers and every sanctioning body known to man kind for any auto competition requires exhaust pipe to extend outside the vehicle body. Finally, When you go from near WOT to no throttle the quick change in exhaust pressure creates a temporary vacuum that will actually suck air back in the exhaust system. If the pipe is too short (I'll let you determine how short too short is) the air drawn in will be much cooler than the temperature of the exhaust gases which will warp your valves and damage your engine.

Look we all like a little rumble, but making you XJ sound like a fiull out race vehicle is irresponsible, unecessary and certainly not cool, dont do it.
Please

It's my trail rig/DD but mainly a trail rig. All four doors are off so I don't have to worry about the fumes. I said in a previous post that I have enough tubing to run the exhaust to the back axle but I'm not putting the muffler/cat back on. Running my exhaust to the back axle will actually be more exhaust than I had on my Jeep previously before I cut everything off. I'm going to weld the pipe up tomorrow in the shop so as to not piss anyone off :fuck-you: Besides, I thought there was no bashing in the newbie section?! I might as well have posted this in the garage...

Continuing attempts at validating a not so kosher idea will net you with responses like the ones above; that is the entire point of the section

i have a picture in my head of what this thing looks like....Im sure it fits the bill of having straight pipes on a stock junky V6.

You asked...we answered...you pulled a "Ricky" and did whatever you wanted regardless of the answer.

We arent bashing you...that will all get taken care of by the people you piss off on the trail/road.

More pipe doesnt make it (much) quieter, it just makes it less loud TO YOU...

I can tell you this, if I were wheeling and you were running around straight piped all day and theen broke down, your chance of help reuces greatly.

Now there are a few exceptions...If you have 500+ hp let it breathe it sounds cool... and I'll still stop just to admire

Carbon monoxide is nothing to play with.

Agreed...

Even 500+ needs a muffler in normal applications...IMHO. A quality exhaust on pretty much any motor sounds good. QUALITY being the keyword here.

same here he should also take into account a spark from that hedder igniting the dry leaves on the trail.

inline 6 not v6:flipoff2:

Ive got a 88 with a Flowmaster no cat. Sounds good, better than a straight pipe. There right though you need a little backpressure.

If its your DD it will require a muffler and cat to pass a visual emissions inspection, They must be on the Jeep, I run a cat, And gibson muffler, If you want the sound to stay, put the cat back on and get a flowmaster from auto zone, put it on your self, it will still sound better than before.
