Un-Brodozing an 05 TJ

So much for inviting you camping

Camping is in tents.

I did install a radio tonight so we can properly social distance yet still communicate.

GER may be my new favorite place to wheel. The terrain is awesome. Beyond impressed with how this little TJ does. The front tires get into the front fenders a good bit so I’ll have to address that with a set of high line fenders of some kind but it threw down on a lot of stuff I was not too sure of.

No real carnage except a winch that wants to cut out under load. Realized that when we were on the hard line half way up Chadalack.

I tried but needed to hit a few more obstacles with my purse. Not ready to turn this one into a raisined out shitmissile just yet 🤣

Would have been fun to play follow the leader in the TJ’s. Beyond impressed with how these things work.

I’d say I found my ground issue. Fixed it with some zip ties and SteelStik so it should be good for a while. It’s the science of metals.

Since I had installed the 8.8 and didn’t have the driveshaft at the time, I did what every seasoned wheeler would do. I put it on the trailer, installed the driveshaft right before leaving for a trip and never checked the pinion angle. Once we got back I knew that would need to be addressed. I would say @Jody Treadway had more vibration issues with their ZJ but it still wasn’t fun. Mine is fixed though with a quick change of pinion angle. Good luck buddy. 🤣

The other night an invoice showed up for a set of Metalcloak over line fenders. The flat ones not the Mount Everest model. They should be here sometime and I’ll get them on hopefully before the get together weekend.

The PO always had 2nd gear/limp mode issues which is why this thing has a new transmission. The issue is 99.9% of the time the PCM in the 05-06 models. That issue seems to be fixed now with a WranglerFix ECU. In addition to getting stuck in 2nd from time to time, it shifted hard from 1-2 and would flare a little from 2-3. Those symptoms are gone based on tonight’s test drive.

The brakes were always soft so it was recommended to me by some dude who was apparently applying chamois butter to himself at the time that I pull this plug and remove an Oring to get more pressure to the back brakes. It needs some pads in the front and more bleeding but the pedal feel is already much better.

We are headed to Uwharrie this weekend to camp for a buddy’s bday so I went ahead and loaded everything up/test fit things for the get together weekend too.

I would put some dielectric grease on those ecu plugs if you haven’t and clean all of the grounds and grounding sites then dab dielectric grease over top of the grounds after tightening for good measure. A lot of jeep pcm issues start with water intrusion or poor grounds

Left Friday afternoon and drove to Uwharrie for a quick camping/wheelin trip for a college buddy’s birthday.

Did some night wheeling and had some beverages by the fire in no particular order.

Cooked some awesome venison smash burgers for the group last night and consumed more beverages before a solid nights sleep in the Eno hammock.

Loaded up and came home this morning.

It was a damn good time to drive down, wheel and drive home. The TJ did great and the new ECU has seemed to help alleviate any of the old shifting/limp mode issues it had.

Looking great man! This is the path to consistent wheeling.

Got one fender installed the other night, still waiting on some LED’s for the turn signals and markers. Other than needing to trim the front of the rocker guards to clear the bung for attaching extended flares, it’s a straightforward install.

Tonight between beers and handing out candy I got the other side torn down. I’ll hopefully have it all wrapped up by the end of the week.

Once the fenders are on the Tcase has to come back out. I was going to hold off til later in the winter but the bearings sound like shit and the Speedo isn’t working. I’ll pull the SYE out of the YJ case and put it in the TJ case that I originally removed.

Finished up the fender install and am waiting on some LED’s for the turn signs and markers. I had replaced the factory hood latches when I got the Jeep and they were already dry cracking so some Amazon specials with rod ends will do the job now.
