i have heard complaints and positives

that being said.....be specific, tell him what you want and what you are using it for. my 1350 joints have broke and his shafts have not broke on 2 straight trips. he is a nice guy, and will treat you right. excellent pricing too!!

I have used Oliver's twice. Once to rebuild my front driveshaft and once to make my rear driveshaft when I installed my SYE. I think he did great work at a very fair price and his turn around time was great. I called in my rear driveshaft (with very specific requests) on a Monday and he had it ready for pick up the following day. Fred is a nice guy, his helper on the other hand doesn't seem to know much so make sure you talk to Fred.

I have also heard Fleet Pride does good work in Greensboro. Their prices on U joints seemed pretty fair as well when I picked up a couple of spares a few weeks back. But I haven't had them do any driveshaft work for me so I can't really comment on that.

An example of Fred's work:

danielsapp414 had some major major problems with that place. dont know the details but if i remember correctly the guy was argumentative about things and his suggestions were completely off. he didnt seem to want to do a certain type of shaft, like the customer asked for or something..

id stay away

Olivers did the shafts that were in my FJ when I bought it. They were good enough, nothing special though.

Joel's looks good though.

Isn't he the same guy that backpedaled on the Jagged Edge Fab criticism as well?

yeah actually I am the same guy just to clarify that point, I was also on second hand information. This is exactly what happened in the case that follows. As far as oliver's goes, his work is good, you need to be specific, he does not understand the whole concept of 4wd as far as I could tell being he said a shaft he did after I specifically asked repeatedly for a DC CV style joint and that the ball type cv joint that i already had was not working etc....(this was obvious after it blew up once) I also asked for a sye kit which he said I did not need. The rear driveshaft he built seemed to be fine for awhile. It ended up causing t-case problems. The front one with u joint on one end and a ball type cv on the other went out after 1 trip just as I predicted. I went back and he was very nice about it saying he thought it would work etc and he gave me a good price on a new one that he put u joints on both ends. He drove it and said it was smooth. No sooner than I picked it up and was on highway 52 it was vibrating bad enough that I had to take it out. I called him and told him the situation. He was willing to give me a deal on it again but I was tired of it so I just called Andy at CRS and he took care of me. What he did was right the first time with no question and was exactly what I had asked for in the first place. I would like that when I ask for something if someone is unable to do it that they not say they will make something that will work but that they don't know how to do it. I wasted over 700$ at Oliver's. The only thing that was reused from his work was part of the front shaft's tubing.
Like I said if you are specific, his work is clean and welds are good and the prices are very reasonable when it is done right, but his shop does heavy trucks and machinery mostly, it is NOT a 4wd shop. I hope this clears up anything that may have been in question. The only backpedaling I would do on Oliver's is not going there in the first place and saving $700 and alot of wasted time and gas going back and forth.

He did a front shaft for me and it broke the FIRST day in Dayton TN. Luckily, Joel I think was his name, brought a mig and properly welded the front yoke on.
Oliver's had a crappy looking booger weld between the front yoke and slip spline which is where it broke. I've NEVER broken a shaft in over 20+ years of wheeling and to have one break on the first day did NOT impress me.
Since then I've been using Drive Train Specialists on Sandy Ridge off I40 across from Northern, beeen quite happy with their work when I had my rear DC shaft rebuilt .02

Interesting. I will have to keep an eye on mine.

Not doubting what you say...I will add Olivers has done a few for me (per wheelbase adjustments) I've never bent, or broken one. I was specific in what I wanted and what it would be used for. The prices were way, way cheaper than Truck parts on Sandy ridge (same place you speak of). The guy at Truck parts was high and a jackass to boot. I thought maybe I just rubbed him the wrong way, but several others have felt slightly violated (bent over) after having work done there. Either way...if $$$ is a factor I'd go to Olivers, and as others have said be specific.

Oliver's does all of our driveshaft's here at Classic Automotive, sure they most times we just have them balenced or shortened or on occastion have a new one built. But they have always done great work at a very fair price, just remember to be specific.-steve

My rear drive shaft in the XJ has done at Olivers. No complaints here, it's held up well after a couple of years of wheelin. I simply gave him the measurement and described the flange (Ford style) that the DC bolts to and he had it ready in less than 24 hours.

Personally seen two break on the trail, be rewelded and hold up for the rest of the weekend. Prices seem good but I was actually on my way there and just thought I'd stop at Fleet Pride in west Greensboro to check, their price was only $5 more and less driving so I went with them. Has held up fine so far.

I have a fleet pride in the rear also. No problems. There is a Fleet Pride in Hickory too, thats where I had mine made. Wish they had thicker tube though, just for peice of mind

thanks bigwhite, glad your satisfied with our work!
