if it's jumping 1800 rpms it's not the converter. you need to see if it's got codes in it. if it's falling out of 4th, it's most likely the coast clutch snap ring has popped out and starting to jam things up.(that would explain the erratic behavior, and its inconsistency)
i don't know where you are in raleigh but you can bring it by the shop and i will check it for you.
 
the converter could have a few different strategies. it's partial lock up in 2nd, partial/full lock up in 3rd and partial/full lock up in 4th. easiest way to tell is drive with your foot on the brake pedal, just enough to turn on brake lights, but not apply the brakes, and see if it still happens.
