The Central North Carolina 4x4 Club is an incorporated, non-profit organization open to all makes and models of 4WD vehicles. The club is based in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area, but we have membership in NC, SC, and VA.

Our members range from first time 4-wheelers to seasoned veterans. Our rigs range from show-room stock to locked, lifted, and otherwise "loaded for bear."

This is a guest post from Randal Holmes, 2010 President of CNC 4x4.

Dec 18th was the last work day of 2010 to maintain the Uwharrie National Forest OHV trail system. Members of Central North Carolina 4x4 (CNC4x4) met numerous members of other clubs and a few from NC4x4 at Hunt Camp at 9am Saturday morning. It was cold with a threat of frozen precipitation, but spirits were high and there was a good turnout. We all met with Terry and Deborah, the Forestry Service Rangers coordinating the work, and they laid out the plans for the day.

CNC4x4 was assigned guardrail duty on Falls Dam while others were put on sign and hay bale duty and removal of hazard trees. Once everyone knew the plans for the day, we loaded up and headed out toward Arrowhead Camp Ground to pick up the guardrails and posts. We then headed to the parking lot at Falls Dam, unloaded our tractor with an auger and started down the trail. CNC4x4 headed about halfway down before starting while NC4x4 started at the trail-head.

At the first location we went to work and had 4 pieces of guardrail installed in about an hour, blocking an illegal bypass. Proceeding down to the lower part of the trail, we stopped at a new culvert and began laying out guardrail to protect it. We stopped for a quick hot dog and soup lunch before continuing. At this time, the snow and sleet started falling. That, along with previous rainfall, left the work area very muddy but it didn’t seem to slow anyone down. Once we had all of our railing and posts laid out, NC4x4 caught up and we went to work on the area together.

With about 20 people working, a tractor and a Bobcat, we tackled this large area on both sides at the same time. The teamwork was great. The two groups merged and helped each other out. Over the next couple of hours we installed about 120’ of railing in the rain, snow and sleet. When the final piece was bolted in we cleaned up the area, loaded back into our vehicles, and we all headed out towards Dickey Bell trail to the parking lot. After unloading the unused guardrail and post here, and saying our goodbyes, we headed back to Raleigh in a light snowfall.
