Worked out great ken.

whats next fenders, and steps on the side? a removable railing would be slick.

yup.. need to get fenders done, ramps, ramps slide in trays, camper steps to get up into camper, and yes Jess has asked for a railing :)

Thanks for giving the Zuk a ride Ken! Jamie is glad she didn't have to drive the Burb pulling the pop-up camper so that I could drive down in the Zuk. :)

Wow Ken, you have done an amazing job! I wish I had 1/10 the skills you possess in fab work!

thanks .. but most people on here could do what I have done over the years.. just need practice.. oh and patience

not a problem at all.

Glad that you guys decided to camp over.. Corbin would have been lonely with out Ivy :)

How much beer to hitch my jeep a ride on thar to Harlan? :driver:

Looks Bitchin' Ken....:beer:

I am less interested in the camper half of this build, but I gotta give you props for the trailer. When you first posted pics, no way would I have thought it would turn out so nice. This really makes me want to find something similar to rebuild/repair so I can have a two car hauler. Nice job.

Thanks.. my wife and few of my friends thought the same thing.

Speaking of which, what WAS that trailer, in it's former life? May help me locate somethign similar. I think we must think on the same plane, fixing something like that, rather than buying new for 4-6x more $$$.

the trailer started life as a late 70's 5th wheel camper 38'

I found the same kind on craigslist but it was a 24'. when I went to see it, I realized quickly it would not work.. the frame was 2x6 1/8" wall and that was no strong enough.. so I talked with the guy and he said well I do have one more over here in the weeds.. Had a ton of crap on it but after I told him i was gonna build a gooseneck trailer with it he said he would sell it to me for same price he has 24' listed at. so we got all the crap off it then hooked it up and dragged it home.. this frames was 2x6 1/4" wall tube..

if you are not in a hurry just keep on eye on craigslist.. but have money ready to spend so you can jump on the deals when they come up

quick price break down for people that wonder.

camper = Free
pop up = $100 for bed parts
trailer = $800
trailer parts = $400 ( jack, neck, etc)
wiring = $100
new Maxxis tires = $600
registration(DMV) = $100
misc = $100

so guess is around $2200

but I did sell my 16ft trailer and a HP dana 60 front axle, that totaled = 2300 so I am doing fine atleast in wifes eyes :)

of course I still need to do more like build driver over fenders.. but I already have the steel so there should not be much more cost added tot he above

Well after a few days of work on the XJ I am back on the trailer :)

I am building drive on fenders.. got the main frame over the tires cut and welded on tonight. tomorrow I plan to do the reinforcement bars and make the frame area to the back of trailer.

I really like how you modified the neck. My tralier is also an old camper. The neck sits really low. I let a freind use it and he didn't pay attention...so I have a nasty dent in the top of my bed. What kind of metal did you use on the neck?

yes the frame and neck is all 2x6 1/4" wall tube..

I am going to add more bracing inside neck to hold stuff like 4x4 blocks, etc

what sort of bracing do you have in mind for the fenders? i dont know much about drive overs, but it looks like if you only brace it down to the bottom of the frame all that weight on them would try to twist the frame. maybe im over thinking that one, i have a tendency to over engineer everything i build and end up with a lot of unnecessary bracing.

It *will* try to twist the frame, but he has crossmembers running between the frame rails (beneath the wood deck), which should prevent that.

Or add more crossmembers if it twists. :)

i am going to add vertical and diagonal bracing..

the jeep tires will drive dead center on main frame rail.. not out by the edges so not to worried about weight by the edge.. but the bracing i plan to do will still support it
