Re-doing my Bed Camper and making a toyhauler

I guess the canvas will clip up somehow each time and then fold/go inside while going down the road? Getting all that watertight will be the biggest challenge.

correct.. the sides will fold in so I can slide the bed in, then I will have a door that closes over opening to seal it.

here is axle with weird pattern.. it says Dexter on them.. and was told they are either 5000 or 6000lb axles

I think those are camper axles, used in the 70s I think, try looking at an RV dealership.Maybe they can help you get some info on them.

Well I did some digging and here is what I found.

on the outside of my drum there is apart number 8-155(kind of looks like 8-156 but dexter says that does not exists)

I called Dexter and a lady looked up all the part numbers I had and said these are 5200lb axles.
brake parts numbers are:
# 23-105
# 23-106
one is for left one for right side.

bearing numbers are
25580 for inner
LM67048 for outer

Dexter can sell the parts direct but they said cheaper to call fleetpride or other large dist. for better pricing
Fleet pride told me
# 23-105 = $82.13
# 23-106 = $78.21

where as dexter was $92.10 each.

my axles also had a tag on them that said serial # 1057153.
they told me by that number these axles were made in Georgia
and had EXCL Rims and Tries

so these are fully rebuild able and since the rims are 15" you can run just about any trailer tire.

yep, those are definitely travel trailer axles. my grandparents and all their brothers/sisters used to travel around the u.s./mexico/canada during their retirement years like a band of gypsies. they all had 70's era campers of some sort or another, and that bolt pattern/wheel sticks out as being on about half of them. funny the things you remember from growing up...

those are very common bearings, if not the standard for axles that capacity. the majority of all 5200-6000lb. axles use them. even the larger 8 lug/7k stuff still uses the 25580 as an inner, just the outer differs. are the backing plates bolted on or welded? either way, brake assemblies is the way to go. it's just a matter of whether or not the backing plates need a quick visit from the cutoff wheel, sawzall, or liquid wrench.

and paying hundreds for bearings??? come on ken, this is all you need... a perfect little kit. just ignore the part that's stamped china.:flipoff2:

seriously though, have you tried agri supply, tractor supply, or even northern? usually between the three of them i've managed to get what a needed at a much better price than fleetpride (or stone heavy as it were).

WAIT! is that a subaru or vw pattern by chance??

Ken before you buy, call redneck trailer supply in Linclonton. They have an online catalog in PDC format. May find what you need there cheaper and they will ship

I know a guy that gets dealer prices from redneck;)

Ken - can you measure the bolt pattern?

Older Subarus (pre-Legacy and Impreza) are 4 on 140mm, which is about 4 on 5.5. They all came with 13-inch rims, and it is almost impossible to find 14 or 15-inch wheels in that pattern. So would be cool if those type of trailer wheels would work (although I know they are hard to find as well).

VW Bugs are 4 on 130mm, right?

<edit> Looking back at your pics, your bolt pattern looks larger than these, but it never hurts to check. </edit>

I'm wanting to see the camper finished.

It will get done :) all that is left is to make door to cover hole when traveling and support bars to support bed when it is out.

but I got to get trailer done for camper to go on :)

right now I have a goal of Oct 9th to be done with it all..

are you converting the trailer to tag-along or just redoing the gooseneck?

it came with a 5th wheel hitch.. and we found a bunch of cracks in steel.. so it is easier just to cut it off and build new.. So I am building a gooseneck setup.

I've got $10 that says your Dodge will still be two-tone on October the 10th. :flipoff2:

Well got trailer into garage.. ( that was a pain)

and started on gooseneck

trailer on side of garage with front and rear cut off

tomorrow I start on horizontal bars and gooseneck coupler

Well great news..

we got the front all welded up and on.. so I could actually move the trailer with my truck right now if i need to.

everything is level and true :)

we also backed truck up and set height of gooseneck coupler. Next is to get front jack mounted so I can raise the trailer without floor jack. then start on extra supports and deck

well I had to modify the support bar, then I washed the old canvas(still needs more washing) and then got it up and tested it to see how it will fit..
It is not perfect but to me it is not worth the money to have it cut down to fit perfect.. maybe down the road if it works out good in the long run.

Here it is looking from front to the back

Looking form the back

Do not mind the dark area that was still wet from me washing it.

another angle to show space from inside.

next is to work on door that will cover the hole when slide is pushed in
Now that is just pretty damn COOL! Door/hatch would hinge right onto the wood at the top, right?

As for that canvas being a little too big, put some grommets along the bottom edges, when it's up just bungee one end to the other and who'll notice?
