Yes I de-water then filter to 1 micron mix with diesel & run the piss out of it. If your behind me you will get hungry. LOL
 
Ya just a water heater & harbour freight pump to circulate the oil till about 130 deg. then I pump it into another tank to settle for 3-5 days. I pull the oil about 3-4" abovr bottom so I am not pulling any setteled trash. pump thru bag filter to one micron. Mix in a 5 gallon jug & puor in.
 
I don't own an oil burner, but was thinking about this filtering.............
17 years in the restaurant biz, I have filtered a gallon or two of shortening. We had different ways of filtering it. One method you just poured it thru a cone filter into another(spare) vat. The other method(safer) you had a filter machine. It also had the same type filtering paper. Basically a one time use stuff, but would do all the vats. We also had a powder that we poured onto the filter, was called filter media, which aided in the filtering to remove even more/finer particles, which is what breaks down the quality of your shortening.
Sooo, I am wondering if a person was able to get ahold of such a machine and filters, and the media, if it would be beneficial for this type application?
Just a thought for you greasers!
 
Even if it didn't filter down to one micron, I am sure it would at leat extend the life of the filters you are using.
 
hmmm, not sure. I thought I understood that these bags used to filter could be cleaned and reused over and over.

the best way I have seen to save some filter media is to put 3-4 old t-shirts together & pour through that befor you begin to de-water & final filtering.
 
I am not all to familiar with this vegetable oil process.

I am going to have about 50 gallons of used veg. oil from a friend that I am helping this weekend. What is the easiest process that I can do to run this in my 95 PSD.

Can I mix this 50/50 with diesel fuel and run with no other heaters or filtering system? (I will be filtering to the stated 1-2 micron.)

I guess my biggest concern is will it mix with diesel straight out of the jug or will it just float on top?
 
It does separate, I run about 5 gallons at a time along with some spirited driving

Make sure of the water content! Must be de-watered before use or it will your ip.
 
I converted a water heater Heat & circulate it thru a 10 micron filter to about 150 deg Really need to get to about 275 deg but I have a clean source of oil never goes outside to a collection drum. After heating for about 8 hours I pump to a setteling tank then 3-5 days of setteling I pull from 3" from bottom.
 
Alright, I think I am getting it, my source will be straight out of the fryer, literally right back in the original containers and to my house.

How much are you heating and circulating at one time?

Are you running it through the 1-5 micron filter that I have heard mentioned?

So youre wanting to brew Bio rather than run SVO right?

I found a calculator online, that calculates the amounts of methanol and lye needed for a batch, based on level of titration, etc. I *think* you may be looking at around 20% methanol from playing with the calculator, but i may be off. I have it saved on a thumb drive at home, I might can get it to you if you want.
 
yeah i searched around and it's roughly 20%. I just wanted to make sure that was right.

As far as making bio, yes. I figure since I have a tractor and a truck I could use it to fuel both instead of converting one system and not the other. I was pricing methanol today and it's gone up. imagine that :rolleyes: anyway, just trying to a rough idea how much i can make it for.
 
just for cost analysis:

Oil = free
Methanol(55gal) = $255
Lye = ??

Now to run a batch of 30 gallons you'll need ~6 gal of methanol. That means you have ~9 batches you can make. My understanding is typically with 30 gallons you can make almost 30 gallons once the methanol and lye are mixed in and glycerin drained off.

So 30 gallons x 9 batches = 270 gallons (lets say 250 to be conservative)

250gal / 255 gal = ~$.98/gal (if you made your own excluding lye costs)

250gal x $0.98 = ~$245 total

250gal x $4.69 = ~$1172.50 (if you payed at the pump)

Does this math look correct?
