Securing a generator at the campsite?

Bought my first generator as I prepare for our enclosed trailer to Jeep hauler conversion build. When we aren’t at the campsite, I plan to lock the generator inside the truck or trailer, but how do you secure it while you are sleeping if you have it running? The handles look like they would only slow down a thief if you ran a cable or chain thru them.

If you’re converting an enclosed trailer, they make provisions to either mount it on the tongue in a box or build a box inside that is ventilated to the outdoors.

Just make sure if you enclose it that it has adequate air flow and that the exhaust is out.
If someone grabs it at night your power goes out alarm wakes you you grab gun there is your security

Amateur!

You're supposed to buy the loudest genny you can. That way no one WANT's to steal it. Just don't put it near @obullfish tent..that sumbeach will put a hand fulla sand in the tank  (he will...I done seen't it! )

I cable lock my honda 2k but it's got a massive integrated handle...that one doesn't look to have ANYWHERE to loop one. In that case...See @Ron post :smokin::sniper:

Off topic a bit: do you plan to pull the rig with the F150? Just curious. You saw mine and it does great with just a trailer and jeep.

The only place I wheel that doesn’t have power is like the Fun Caravan or whatever event going on down at Uwharrie. I can’t imagine someone actually stealing it from that area.

Even at Harlan, AOP and places my tools and stuff just sits out. I hope I don’t jinx myself but no one has ever messed with anything.

Insurance and roll? Wonder if something would cover it?
I'm almost dead tired of thief proofing crap.
If I could get it covered, I'd just as well leave it all unlocked and my gun cocked.

I ordered an enclosed trailer to convert, didn’t know what generator I’d end up with, so didn’t spec out the inside box.
Once I get it, I’ll look at how much room I have on the tongue. It’s a V-nose, but with an extended tongue.

That is the plan. 5.0 with the 10 speed tranny. I may end up missing the old Cummins I had, but since 99.5% of my driving is without a trailer and Jeep behind me, (and I’ve had 3 back surgeries) I went for comfort instead of unlimited towing capacity when I bought my new truck.

I doubt it. Alan has the EcoBoost with the 10 speed, the EB and 5.0 towing will be similar, and his truck flat out works. He can run off and leave me without trying and he can run right with your old Cummins all day long. All while getting 10-11mpg and not working the truck too hard.

It’s amazing what those extra gears will do. Him dropping a few gears to climb a hill is very different than me with a 4 speed lol. I think you will love how well it tows.

I got 9 mpg this last trip. It’s a different story than a trip to AOP as you know.

@VortecJeep, I think you’ll be impressed. I wouldn’t want to put the truck through that all the time, but I’m like you. How much will your trailer weigh?

And back to the original question.... ELECTRICITY is the invisible guard dog. But this day and age, you’d probably get sued for a thief shocking themselves.

I’ve never felt the need l lock anything up until this last AOP trip. Some Hood Rats were allowed in and just hung out right beside us until after midnight. Not cool at all.

I think you're over-thinking it. The only time I ever needed to run the generator at night was in a truck stop in South Carolina in July, and the damn thing wouldn't start. An inverter and some 12v fans took care of anything else. It would get hot/humid inside the camper late in the evening if the A/C hadn't been on, but an hour or so before bedtime always knocked it down to a comfortable level.

And you can deck out the trailer top with Solar!

Do you have a topper on your truck? If so, maybe slid open the windows and lock it inside at night? With the exhaust routed out, of course.

Or build a bigger roller mount, similar to what they have for coolers. A steel plate that the genny is bolted down to. It has larger wheels and a pull handle. You can also weld on d-rings/mounts on it to chain it down with.

Yes I have a topper. I like the idea of a steel plate too.

Running generator while sleeping. No one is stealing it they are destroying it so they can sleep. Lol
If needed for medical needs be a true overlander and get a jackery for your CPAP.

If I may slide in on your thread?

I
went off for the weekend, secured all the doors, set a light on a timer, & even turned off the garage doors, as always! I return home 49 hours later, to find my basement entry door open. I Even left the lights on, so at night, anyone passing on the side street, could see! Of course with the garage doors, no one knows when I'm home or not. But, thankfully, No one "Investigated" my Invitation! So much for the ADT signs.

In my defense I asked nicely once if they could reposition the loud POS and they were a smartass about it so before bedtime I added a handful of silencer to the fuel tank. Funny I didn’t hear the loud POS the rest of the weekend.

Sand is cheaper than sugar. Besides, you probably use the sugar, in your coffee!
