Ball Mounts

I bought mine at either tractor supply or northern tool. I can't remember. It's a solid forged ball mount, not welded hollow square tube like most. I think it's rated to 25k lbs. I also got a non chrome ball at the same store rated to 25k. The hitch pin is rated high too. Both are rated higher than the receiver hitch on the truck so they aren't my weak link. This one is 2.5" since that's what my 16f250 uses. My old 03 f250 I had a 6" drop 2" square version, since that truck was lifted.

Was going to say, I used to have 1 trailer that was built with the 2.5" tongue hitch. Luckily I had the 3-way receiver, with forged balls. But, My truck receiver was only a class 3. I never towed more than 5-6K anyway. You need a class 4, for anything over 6k.
 
I use a forged 2" insert and 2 5/16" ball for my car trailer, and a Bolt Lock pin.

I have a standard forged ball mount but have been eye balling a different one. I was hoping you would chime in because I've been looking at those and was wondering what your opinion was on them. It would make it easy to determine load placement for tongue weight.

I even looked at a weight distributing hitch but don't know if it will help that much with a large trailer. They seem to be geared more toward campers.

I pull with a 28' deckover 14k master tow trailer. My trail rig is tall and top-heavy with wobbly suspension. Trailer and trailrig weigh between 10 and 11k lbs. I don't use a weight distributing hitch or any kind of sway controls and the thing tows great. I do chain the axles down then throw a strap across the front/rear recovery points to suck down the suspension, otherwise it does feel like towing a trailer full of jello.
