6.0 tunes

Short of a stuck ds brake caliper, the annoying door locks that don't unlock the rear doors when you put it in park and the seat belt beeper

Unplug the seat belt wire down beside the seat. It won't beep anymore, one of the first things I did on my excursion.

Ordered a blue tooth OBD reader for it and downloaded torque pro but the dongle wasn't compatible with it.So I wound up getting the OBD fusion app and w the exception of no EOT reading it does everything
I wanted to do.BUT the EOT,to me, is the most crucial thing I want to monitor.Im gonna have to revisit that and either figure out why the EOT option doesnt work on the app or possible use my old android, with a new dongle and the Toruqe pro app.
Finally broke down and bought another BT reader for my old Android, downloaded Torque Pro and finally got everything goin.

FD weekend we were in Dunn/Wilson for a couple of days w an 16 foot enclosed trailer. It's a 8.5 X 16 tandem that was mostly empty, maybe 1000 lbs of weight in it. At 75 mph EOT ran 10-15 above ECT w a spike of almost 20 during extended pulls at 75.Dropped temps faster than it gained so no sudden spikes just a gradual rise. Coming back we pulled fancy gap at 65 mph w EOT's at 15 above, cooled back to 12 above when we crossed the top and that was from a dead stop coming off the ramp at the bottom at the Flying J.

last night we went to Knoxville to a concert so we were empty and at a sustained speed of 72-75 w cruise on(Jake was driving) for about 45-50 mins EOT's were 8-12 over ECT's.Coming home last night at 80-85 mph w me driving EOT's were closer to the numbers it had when pulling.I feel the load doesn't affect the eot's as much as the speed.By the time we got home last night the outside temp had cooled to 64(per the display on the dash) and the ECT was 179 w the EOT at 190 as we were merging off Int 81.We are 13 miles from INT 81 and at 55mph for that 13 miles it was just 6 different.

So what's the conclusion here?? Does that seems typical??? Is there a EOT "#" that's not to be exceded regardless of what the ECT's are??

That all sounds fine, assuming you still have the EGR in place?...

"When the ECT is greater than 105°C (221°F) or the EOT is greater than 123°C (253°F), the fueling rate of the engine is modified to provide cooling protection and prevent engine damage due to overheating."

I can promise you it will and will barely move the truck, much less the truck and a load! As already stated, my over-temp was due to a failing e-fan... hasn't been an issue since the BDP fan conversion.

@Curtis_H had a 6.0 for a while, he had temp issues but with EGT, because of that he never drove it long enough to see if the delta between ECT and EOT were off, because he immediately dove into finding the issue. I only bring it up because similar to what @Caver Dave said, Curtis has a bad fan and also the intercooler and radiator were extremely dirty. He cleaned them with AC coil cleaner and replaced the fan and it was golden then!

I would worry what they would be if you were to put a real load behind the truck.

From my experience, and research on forums and speaking with Scott at "Trucks unlimited" here in town (specializes in Ford diesels) If you have an EGR delete you need to be within 10 degrees of the EOT on flat grade under 75mph, loaded or unloaded. On a pull that will extend to 15 but ECT shouldn't get more than 218-220. At 225 all the warning lights come on, and the temp gauge starts screaming at you.

I have EGR delete, 4" exhaust with a no obstruction muffler (can't stand that "glasspacks on a 79 scottsdale" rattle of a true straight piped 6.0) and have replaced 3 oil coolers. I replaced the 1st oil cooler due to the typical gold factory coolant that turns to sand about 90k. I was getting differences of 15 degrees in EOT and ECT unloaded at hiway speeds. It got worse the more over 80 I went, so speed definitely effected it. That's typically the signs the oil cooler is clogged. After replacing the oil cooler and properly flushing my system, and replaced with proper coolant and I never had more than 10 degrees difference. Even loaded...UNTIL....

Once the head gaskets let go on the climb leaving Golden Mountain a few years ago, replaced the second oil cooler when I added the studs. But about a year later I started having overheating issues climbing black mountain with slide-in, equipment trailer and Jeep loaded along with about 2000# of crap. Talked with a few folks and found out they changed the replacement oil cooler design with a new one that was better. Decided to change it once again, and changed the water pump with a bulletproof one and it got better, but would still not let me run cruise up Fancy Gap without getting in the 225 region. Talked over symptoms with Nakoma and he was convinced I had a radiator problem. Stupid me should have replaced the radiator after the head gaskets let go, but didn't. Nakoma he helped me replace the radiator a couple of months ago. Haven't pulled either hill yet loaded, but ran 199/189 going 80-85 pulling the YJ to the beach last month.
I'll pull fancy gap here in about 3 weeks, so we'll see

I assume it goes back to normal after it cools down?? Yeah egr is still there, full exhaust, all stock, even the factory style breather and box.I wanted to get some kind of base line assessment of things before I changed the coolant and flushed the system in case I needed to do the oil cooler while I was in there.Im gonna add a coolant filter too while Im at it.

Yeap, until it hits the mark again... which was about 4-5 "cool downs" for me coming back from Swannanoa dragging 7000#. Once it got hot pulling Old Fort Mtn. it took a LONG time to cool down and not much time to get warm again.

I didn't, but many other run the chemicals when flushing. Couldn't get the block drains out, so back-flushed the oil cooler (water + compressed air), switched to the non-SCA ELC (fawk Ford's "gold" coolant) and added a coolant bypass filter.
As Phillip said, my tranny cooler/condenser/intercooler/radiator were also packed... literally a bushel of corn stalks (suspect it was blasted thru a field at some point) and pounds of filth... easily rectified by pulling the intercooler & radiator and pressure washing everything.

Like @CasterTroy, I went with the BPD waterpump when I did the fan swap.

Have you considered the external oil cooler? Is that still a thing? I remember years ago it was “all the rage” but it was something stupid like $1800 or something.

just know this...if you flush the cooling system...especially if you use the fleetguard 1 &2 stage products....you are using and acid and a base compound. Need to flush well between or you wast the 2nd. Finally there is a high probability you will speed up any weak cooling system points by doing so.

If I was going to flush (I did in the pst but wouldnt again) id just swap to straight water and run it a couple hundred miles, drain and repeat over a week thn top off with good coolant.
I flushed my 6.0 with no symptoms and took out the EGR cooler 500 miles later. Used that as the excuse to delete it.

Scott at TU (is it still in business? last I heard thought he had shut down and went to work for someone else) is the man. However I disagree with him on the delta value for deleted trucks.
The EOT ECT delta is really only valuable to assess how much the EGT cooler is heating the coolant. If its deleted it isnt an issue. On a deleted truck a EOT/ECT delta value is basically irrelevant....other than it can be useful to point to some other weaknesses. But those weaknesses are different than in a non delted truck.

Meaning...if oil temp is out running coolant temp then that points to either a clogged/failing oil cooler OR oil breakdown.
Its still data its just completely different data analysis at that point.

Did that as well

This!

I think Scott may be out of business now as well. Rode by the shop last week and signs were all gone. Still lots of fords outside, and he still lives in the same place, but maybe he HAS closed shop :(

Yeah not a knock on him....I had my truck towed to WS to to have it deleted by him. Does good work.

A little info to pass along...

First tank full after exhaust/tuner was 13.8mpg (hand calc'd) and was NOT easy on it, so pretty sure it'll hit 15+mpg driving sensibly/highway.

Pulled my brothers (@Tater) 28' enclosed (10k gvwr... empty trailer just at 6k ) to Red River Gorge KY last weekend. Fortunately, we only lost one tire (10 miles from my house)... moved the Moss back about 6" and rolled from there.

"Lumpy" did good running the SCT 50HP tow Tune, total weight a little over 21k (scaled at Loves) with the AC blasting. ECT never went north of 208*, despite numerous 55+mph 3rd gear runs UP some ridiculously steep/long (miles) hills and immediately settled back to 190*-195* after cresting. The EOT got over 255* several times going and coming, but never defueled (oil/filter change before we left with Rotella T6 0w40). Must have blown a clog out of the cooler coming back, as the EOT dropped significantly at one point and never went north of 225* after that? Oddly, the EOT has always crept up while on the highway running 70+mph, but didn't see that this trip. Tranny never went above 180*...

Averaged 8.5mpg loaded and was able to go door to door (300 miles) on a single 40gal tank...

Goin out of town for a week in about three weeks and gonna do the flush before I leave,What coolant did you guys use?? I have never read so much conflicting stories about the same topic in my life as their are about 6.0 coolants.Use the red,no use the purple, cat only for me.nah you gotta use the ford gold.Im under the impression it needs to be a poly orgainc a/f but which one??

Thank you sir. From my research I assume, barring any future oil cooler/cooling systems issues,it's good for the life of the truck?

That was my conclusion as well, but I can't see there not being a hose replacement, or reason the coolant WOULD stay in there indefinitely
Did you swap the degas cap also??
Yes. I bought the FORD replacement

Bought a new degas cap today and noticed what looked like a/f that had been pushed out of the degas bottle and laid there until it solidified.Could that be because of the weak spring in the factory degas cap or a sign of other things?Degas bottle was a little low but not below the minimum line and I have never noticed a coolant smell or puddle of coolant under the truck.Coolant was on the minimum mark when I bought it and I topped it off w the ford gold a/f. The bottle is now about down to where it was when I filled it.Seems like Ive heard/read of them pushing a lil coolant out if to the max mark on the bottle. Is that right??

I’ve read the same, a lot of guys say the low fill mark is actually where they need to be full. That’s where I’ve always kept mine and haven’t had any issues.

There's almost 7 gallons of coolant in these pigs going from ambient to 200*F will cause some expansion!
Prior to swapping out the old (likely factory ) cap, mine would burp a little (tablespoons), but not a drop out of the degas bottle since...
