The Never Tight TJ Build

The paint and primer in one...Rustoleum Universal, I think it is....that's the best sticking spray paint I've ever used! It doesn't chip off either!

Did you warp it yet?

Not that I could tell, still looked good and true to my calibrated eyeball. Not a pavement pounder anymore so if it did move some I don't care, that and at some point some did a cut and turn and the drivers side has 2* of castor more than the other.

I'll go on the hunt for some. We used some Rusty metal Primer I got from lowes and that stuff was amazing but haven't found it again since I ran out.

What style steering are you going to go with? Looks pretty good so far. And are you still using the stock fuel tank out back?

Edit, nvm I see you’re keeping it on the tie rod holes and not doing steering arms.

Just single shear 3/4" bolt off the knuckle. Too poor for high steer and I didn't want to constantly worry about high steer studs. Easier to check two bolts than 6-8.

I did a Motobilt fuel cell behind the back seat when I strecthed it.

Thanks to @Van-go I got the new wheels swapped over last night.

@adamk and myself are getting the axle finished up today and hopefully under the Jeep. Just depends on the how distracted we get with all the other stuff to do on the Jeep.

Yesterday @adamk and myself spent awhile trying to install the RCV's the way they say to do it(at least what they show on the website) to no avail. I think part of the reason is the 1/2" wall tube doesn't allow the shaft and boot to move like it can on a thin wall tube.

So today when @Joe J. stopped by we decided to try another way I'd seen.
For anyone that has to install RCV's this is the way to do it for traditional spindle 30/44.

Got the good shit for "break-in" only took visiting 3 parts stores to get enough fluid.
20190630_182808.jpg

Got the ram mounted, tie rods on, and the spindles. Then got to packing bearings and it was after I got done we figured out I had ordered the wrong inner bearing and seal. I'll do some searching Tomorrow and figure out what bearing set and seal I need.

Man what a day in the shop. Got one project done and out of the shop which gave me some time on my Jeep. Got the hubs installed along with the drive flanges then @adamk and I wrestled the 44 under the Jeep. Really loving how this thing is coming together, really think I'm gonna build a 5 lug 14 bolt this winter for some extra width in the rear.

Still have a lot to do but really wanted to see it on the ground.

Dis bitch wide, pretty sure I'm gonna take the spacers off the front till I get a wider rear axle.

Super strong track bar.

Gonna take a break from the shop tomorrow and get back at it Saturday. Hopefully I can get the orbital mounted, lines ran, and track bar done.

I would suggest building an axle that uses 99-04 unit bearings for the rest, if you want to be 5 lug.

Biggest downside, to me, is needing double spline shafts.

I'll probably take the stock 14 bolt hubs and modify them myself. I would love to build a FF 9" with Super Duty ends but that would cost thousands and I can buy, build, and install a 14 bolt for less than a grand.

Got the frame cleaned up from plasma cutting the steering box mount and track bar bracket off. Was a bit more grinding than I expected. Then got the Ruffstuff track bar bracket cut to fit a TJ frame and tacked in place. Gonna pull the springs tomorrow to sit her down on the bumps to check clearances.

Happy with how this turned out.

Still have to figure out sway bar mounting. Haven't thought of a clean way to mount it off the track bar bracket yet. Sorta toying with this idea but making a longer tab with a bend in it to kick it in some.
20190708_231343.jpg

Drivers side should be pretty easy, gonna fab a tab similar to the stock TJ brackets. I need to put a slight bend in the arm for clearance, prob do it on both sides to help the PS some.

TJ with a full width d44 I’ve been working on. Clamp is on the anti rock mount

All in how you wanna package it. Personally mine needs some speed holes or something. Figured the skeleton look would church it up some because it’s a big ole eye sore.

Let me know if you need any more grinding discs. Loooks goood buddy

I'll grab some from ya when I pick up that battery charger, you close to being ready to set up those gears in that 60?
I know you’re kind of in a crunch time on yours. I’ll wait til you’re done
