Tow rig tires.... again.

I know this has been discussed over and over but as time goes by opinions change and what once was though to be great turns out not to be.My new to me F-350 is about ready for a set of tires.It currently has 245/75/17's BFG Long Trail TA's on it and I haven't had it long enuf to know what kinda tire life they have given.They have wore even and ride reasonably good but would like something a lil more aggressive.

Last truck had Firestone's on it and I got about 45K out of a set of 235/85/16's but it was 2wd and basically had a set of hi way tread all season radials on it.Been looking at the Destination AT's for it and like them pretty good,could have a little more cleat but ride quality and life is more important.

What's the latest/greatest must have tires?? Looking to spend around $12 hundo for a set of six.Not stuck on any brand but I have had the best service out of the Firestones.Hancook,and Kuhmo's didn't run as long for me.

My vote is the Toyo ATII had them on the old dually (2WD). Will be putting them on my new one (4WD) and the wife runs them on her 2500 (4WD). They have a 50k mileage warranty as well.
 
The Cooper AT3 XLTs on my truck currently have been excellent. I've got about 15k miles on them and they are probably 70% tread remaining, which is phenomenal for me. I'm not easy on tires. Quiet on the highway, balance good, ride good, and agreasive enough you don't have to worry about soft/wet ground. Definitely not a mud terrain, but they work great for an all around tire that won't leave you stranded in wet grass.

Cooper usually has a rebate going, and www.discounttiredirect.com also will have rebates around the same time. Plus free shipping and no tax. They are currently $195 each.
 
I've had to replace my fronts due to a bad alignment, but I'm STILL rocking my Nitto Terra Grapplers on my dually after 8 years and 45k miles. I'm closer to the wear bars than I am to NEW depth but not significantly close.

On the other hand, mine were normally bald at that point. Don't get me wrong, I liked them, and I bought several sets. But you could hitch up a trailer and watch them burn off.

This, the set I had on my 99 PSD had practically no wear when I sold the truck and they were on there for 2 years of daily use.

This is a fair point. If you're making a bunch of power, you're going to see more rear tire wear. If you drive a 6.0, I'd be more worried about spraying them with fungicide to keep the moss from growing.

Sounds like you have experience in parking tow rigs for extended periods of time. What brand fungicide do you use on your Cummin's? :flipoff2:
 
Had to replace my fronts recently (bad BJ's, alignment, & sticking calipers) whilst out of town... ended up going with Cooper Discoverer RXT's (stock LT235/75-16).

IIRC, pretty reasonably priced, balanced well, pretty quite, and the tread ("aggressive/rugged" :lol:) does well between the road, the 1/2 mile of gravel drive, & occasional wet grass
 
My vote is for Coopers. Either the ST Maxx or the AT3 XLT. I've been running the ST Maxx for something like 20,000 miles and they've held up well towing my excavator and tractor.

I hear that over and over again.

I’ve seen Nittos go a long way on heavy trucks, and ride good while doing it. Coopers are great too.

I currently run Mastercraft Courser H/T (made by Cooper) on my tow rig. Not enough miles to really to have a valued opinion yet, but they ride good and handle the weight fine.

On the other hand, I have a set in the driveway that have 40k on them, probably good for another 20k, even including burnouts. LT265/70R17 load E AT/2, truck weighs 7k, mostly city miles

That is interesting. Mine were the old style AT's. I bought them new back in 2007. Maybe the newer AT's have better tread life. I bought my Nitto's slightly used off this site in probably 2011. Both were Load range E, 285's for 16's. My truck is an 01 Ram CTD quad cab short bed. I weighed it many years ago, and I think it was about 6,700-6,800 lbs. I think the front axle had 4,000-4,100 on it.

Up until the Firestone’s I wasn’t able to get but about 30k out of a set of six, even w rebalance and rotation.I put a set of Hankooks on my F250 work truck and they lasted about 20k.
