Jeep YJ Push Start Wiring

Something in my steering column decided to die last weekend. The ignition switch is fine, but the actuating rod will not retract fully to engage the starter from the ignition switch. Therefore, instead of tearing into the steering column to perform a fix on something that may brake again down the road, I thought it would be easier to wire in a push button start.

I know I need ACC toggle switch, RUN toggle switch, and a START momentary push button. The question is how to rewire the existing wires. Currently there are 2 wire looms going into/out of the ignition switch.

Wire Loom 1:
2 - White with Black stripe
1 - Black with Red stripe
1- Solid Red (Constant 12V I think)

Wire Loom 2:
1 - Solid Black
1 - Solid Blue
1 - Solid Yellow

If someone with better wiring diagrams than me could enlighten me on the these wire designations that would be great. Any other tips or advice for eliminating the key cylinder for starting would be much appreciated.

If the key switch turns every thing on, you may for a temporary fix, just run a push button to the solenoid, & engage the starter from there. Hoping you still got the Ford style solenoid on the fender well! You got a Hot battery cable on the large side post, & one of the two small post will activate the starter. You can test this with pliers or anything that will jump the 2 post.

That's the method I'm using right now to troubleshoot a few other things. Just looking for a more permanent solution now.

For anyone who may need this thread in the future. I finally figured it out.

Wire Loom 1:
2 - White with Black stripe - Did not use (I believe it is for brake lamp switch output)
1 - Black with Orange stripe - RUN
1- Solid Red - 12V Constant

Wire Loom 2:
1 - Black with White stripe - ACC
1 - Solid Dark Blue - RUN
1 - Solid Yellow - START (momentary push button)

This is what worked for me and my setup.

So the black/white wire basically turned everything on as if you had the key in when you flipped the switch? (Radio, lights, fuel pump etc) and yellow is for engaging the starter?

The black with white stripe turned on the accessories such as radio. Basically anything that came on with you turn the key in to the first position.

The dark blue and black/orange wire powered the ECU and fuel pump. Basically everything needed for the engine to run.

Yes, the yellow wire is for engaging the starter. All that was needed was a momentary switch for bumping the starter.

If you want to simplify it, have a locked switch that will apply power to the black/white, blue, and black/orange. And a momentary switch for yellow/starter.

Thank you 2 yr old has lost my key. This was the only thread anywhere I could find a 95' all other years seemed to use different colors.

So just so I have got this right. Need a switch for 12v constant. Which connects to another switch that has the black/orange black/white and blue connected to it. And then yellow is to momentary switch which is also connected to the 12v switch. Sorry never wired an ignition only lights, radios, etc. My only other thing will that unlock the steering wheel since I dont have the key?

Yes the solid red wire will be your constant 12v power source. If you can unmount the plastic ingition switch (that all the wires go to) behind the dash/on top of the steering column it will make more sense.

I can't help with the steering lock. My Jeep never locked the steering to begin with.

It's not very difficult to change out the lock cylinder. Drill it out with a large (half inch?) drill. Then remove the locking bar from inside the hole. Then you will be able to remove the lock cylinder as normal. That or take your title to the dealer and they can cut you a new key.
