6.0 tunes

Well...at least the 05+ trucks had a damn good front axle, transmission, and transfer case. I can't say much about the rest of it. If you have to spend as much on the motor as you spent on the truck, juuuust to keep it together, it might be a piece of shit :D
 
4" exhaust (WITH MUFFLER!! Sounds like ASS straight piped)
EGR delete with sinister up-pipe
65+ HP towing tune (SCT)
SOME kind of monitor to constantly watch EGT, EOT, ECT
And most importantly, DO NOT leave the cruise control on when climbing with +10K load.

I was leaving golden mountain fully loaded and hit that climb on 40 with the cruise at 70 when the temp went from 215 to 250 in less than a second. Limped home by stopping every 100 miles to add a gallon of water :shaking: (thank GOD for @Jason W. )

After that I got decked, ARP gaskets, ARP studs and never use the cruise unless I'm rolling on flat ground. (lesson learned the hard way)

And I disagree with Phillip....the 2003 "whistle" is annoying to me. Maybe because the only times I've heard it were when driven by total douche canoe's that seemed to be thoroughly getting off to it's sound and made SURE everyone around them heard the variation in throttle o_O

Im familiar w the whistle.Some dude came by here one time to get an axle and I could hear him before he even got here.Not sure I could listen to that all the time,two weeks in and im not sure if Im gonna like looking at all that Red.Last four trucks I've had have been white,not that I like white.
 
Im putting together a parts trip now so hopefully Ill get to see how it'll act having a 1000 or so miles put on it in two days.

Hell the reason I bought it to begin with had nothing to do with fan-boy loyalty, or because I was desperately trying to be part of the "cool club".....I mean, I currently own a chevy dumptruck and had a dodge truck and durango prior to my 2002 silverado...I'm a PROUD whore!! It's because of value-per-$-spent. I knew going in the "6.blow" would likely cost me $3500 at-some-point, but that was still $8k-$10k LESS than any Dodge or Chevy that I could find for MONTHS (this was 2010 btw) At that time, the price of a *sub-100k diesel that wouldn't get stuck in wet grass, and could carry more than 2 people was hovering at $30k I bought mine 9 years ago with 75k on the clock for $19k cash. I put 25k on it before I pushed it too hard. Paid less than $3k for someone ELSE to do the decking, studs, and a clutch (The cab was off...it was easy, why not?) and STILL have less invested than most people I know (other than phillip....he doesn't count cheap bastard :smokin:) who bought a Chevy or a Dodge.

*sub-100k because you don't take a vehicle that has been driven daily or weekly for 1000's of miles, to then only drive is 2-3 times a month....I'm no mechanic, but I've seen it first hand enough to know vehicles are like women and they become accustomed to a certain treatment. You change that and the bitch comes out in them every dang time
 
03' excursion here with the 6.0

SCT tuner (iTSX, don't recommend it)
Mild injectors (because it needed them anyways), not worth the $$, would go with stocks if I had to do it again.
07' axles/suspension swap, VERY worth it over the old suspension
Obviously has the 03' turbo, 4" exhaust with muffler. I think they sound like dookie without a muffler
Has 270k miles on it, and in the last 90k (I bought with about 180k) it has had head studs, injectors, got rid of the stock oil cooler and put one in front of the radiator. It has been one heck of a tow pig but got retired to mommy mobile since I bought a F350. Regularly grossed 20-25k lbs with the excursion, it's earned it's keep that's for sure. The f350 does SOOO much better towing the same weight, it has a Cummins 24v, which I think currently needs injectors....

Nah...it's not a secret that they have some design flaws. Four head bolts per cylinder definitely wasn't enough for those fairly thin, aluminum heads to stay sealed. When I dislike stuff, it's based on reliability and how hard it is to work on...not blind brand loyalty.

Michael has the perfect truck IMHO. 2005 F350 CC LB 4x4 DRW CUMMINS, if it only had an Allison it would be absolutely perfect
 
Hopefully it still has the 5R110. Those are beefy.
 
It's not the perfect truck. It is a 24v vp44 engine, BUT it is the 'big boy' block so that's a good thing. The 5r110 is a GREAT transmission, pretty sure it is stock trans in my excursion with 270k and it still shifts awesome. The 5r110 in the Cummins truck does not shift like I'd like, I still need to work some bugs out with that. Plus, it downshifts and will rev the Cummins to 3500rpm or higher. That doesn't sound bad on the 6.0 but it makes the Cummins sound like it is going to come apart, so I have to be careful using tow/haul coming down hills---when it is needed most.... The engine braking of the Cummins is nowhere near as good as the 6.0 since the Cummins does not have a VGT turbo.

The perfect truck would be an 05+ Ford with common rail Cummins and Ford 6spd manual transmission.

Chevy has a good transmission, and the engines are alright too, but they are still a PITA to work on in comparison to an i6. Plus, who would want IFS?

Also- There is this YouTube dude who owns a shop in GA who is a Powerstroke guru, and swears by the 6.0 once properly refined. You can go waste some time on some no too long vids in the link below to learn a little more.

I like watching Bill's vids, very informative IMHO and he seems to know his shit (albeit there's many on the interweb that will disagree...go figure). He pretty much sold me on getting a 6.0 for a while (not sure now as I'm up in the air on it vs. the 7.3 SD). All that said, I find it a bit weird he swears by the 6.0 but his shop truck that he goes to get all these 6.0s is a 7.3SD (Spot) and his personal vehicle is a 6.4. o_O

I bought mine 9 years ago with 75k on the clock for $19k cash.

This is insane to me. It seems like people have figured out these motors aren't as bad as they once thought bc it seems the going rate for CC 6.0's w/ under 200k miles is $15k-$20k in good condition.

Nah whats driving up price is the rocket escalation of new prices.
 
Yeah it seems they have gotten more popular in the last couple years. I think the bullet proofing got a little cheaper from more people producing parts for them and info being more widely available on what all is needed to fix them correctly.

I think it has more to do with what Ron says about new trucks being $60k plus driving up the older one.

My only issue with a 7.3 truck is either you pay $17-$20k for a truck that’s 16+ years old, or you find a cheap one that’s been ragged out for $10k-$12k. So even if you find a relatively low mile truck with this “Holy Grail” super reliable engine, other parts on it are still approaching 20 years old. Granted I drive a 1/2 million mile truck, but I paid pennies on the dollar compared to a 7.3

I have a client selling an 06’ CCLB Lariet dually 6.0 that has had all the work plus new tires. It has like 170k miles. He wants $15k. That same truck if it were a 7.3 would be $19k and would have leaf spring suspension up front with a bad turning radius and lesser interior features.

Nothing wrong with 7.3 trucks at all, I love them. It just seems the popular tax is extreme when you consider dollars spent vs age, creature comforts, towing ability and such. If a man could pick up a crew can 7.3 4x4 that wasn’t a trashed work truck for less than $10k I could see it. But not what they’re asking these days.

If that were a SRW I'd be interested in checking out. I'm wanting a CCLB F350 SRW, either 6.0 or 7.3...not sure which yet. Only big booty I'm toting around these days is my wife's.

Yes, do the EGR delete, oil cooler, and STC fitting all at the same time. The cooler is the main issue with the EGR. They are prone to rupture which causes all the coolant to pump out the exhaust. I also recommend spending the extra money and getting the EGR delete with the up-pipe. It eliminates a failure point by getting rid of the bellows section in the stock pipe and also has less restriction by getting rid of the internal scoop that is designed to catch exhaust for the EGR. It will be a lot easier to put on if you have two sets of hands though.​

I know there are no set in stone rules but is that typically something that happens on higher mileage engines???

I've replaced STC fittings on trucks from 75k miles on up. It's a bad design that should have never been used. It was just to make the initial assembly process a little faster.

I'm no ford expert guru mechanic...but I'll give you my opinion and experiences.
My last 6.0 I sold with 245k on the odometer and had never touched the snap to connect fittings. Sure some fail, like any part, but they are also prone to breaking/leaking if they bear weight. I think mnay folks cause their own issues there. If they weren't leaking Id be inclined to leave them.

I think we're talking about different STC fittings. I'm talking about the STC fitting that connects the HPOP to the branch tubes. There's no way for this fitting to bear weight and they are very prone to failure. When they fail, the HPOP cannot maintain pressure and you're walking. This fitting gets replaced with a solid steel tube that is a redesign from Ford so that it eliminates the STC portion of it. If the turbo is already off for the EGR delete, it's simply a matter of removing the IPR and removing the HPOP cover to get in there and replace it. The parts are about $50. An extra hour and $50 sure beats a tow bill and a long day.
