Camping Cape Lookout NC

Round numbers, about $150 round trip.

It's about $100 for the vehicle (depending on length) and about $15/ea for passengers.

The ferry for the south island can be done for around $100 in my 4dr JK, me & my wife. The North island is better if you are looking to get away from the crowds and it is about $130 - $150 for two people.

Davis ferry is $75 most trucks, $14 per person. Cape lookout Cabins & Camps ferry service $80 & $16 respectively. North Island Morris marina prices same as Davis ferry service.

I just got back from there. Took my yota out there and camped. So awesome. Camped right on the beach. Drove down the sound road getting some air! lol... its an awesome spot... only rule, cant have open container in car.. thats it! you can crush beers and drive down the beach and thats fine, just toss your empties before you roll!

no beach permits required.

Pay for the ferry and you are good to go!

I'm looking to head out there mid-October if I can get an opening in one of the cabins. :)

I usually take a trip out to Nags Head/Oregon Inlet in September, work is pushing that trip back. I've been wanting to do a trip to Cape Lookout for a while, and my Bronco wil be buttoned up by then. The next hurdle is convincing the little lady that air/water temps (and bugs) won't be that bad. From this thread, sounds like the bugs will be gone, but how will the air/water temps compare to September OBX temps???

You are an idiot. Sounds like you were breaking some laws. Then you post on a public forum. Give the Enviro Nazis some more fuel. Maximum speed on island is 25 mph I do believe. If you were getting air at 25 mph or less I apologize for that. NC traffic laws also apply on the island. This includes dui laws. The "just toss your empties before you roll" is kinda vague. Are you indorsing littering?

Responsible people might want to start with the info on the NPS site.

Yes they are all NC ATV laws enforced. Only one rider per bike and a helmet and eye protection. Speed limit applies to everybody and the Rangers check everybody. Just find out the rules at the ferry service and follow them and you'll have a great time. One of the Best Places On Earth to go and relax. Enjoy!!!!

I made a trip out to CLO the third weekend of November with a few coworkers. The weather was great, and not a single bug to be seen.

The only mistake made was the tent stakes. As noted earlier in the thread, cylindrical stakes didn't work even though they were extra long. After drinking around the fire in the evening it started to rain, so we called it a night. I go to where i had set the tent up only to find it MIA. Had to go search down the beach in the rain to find it. It had moved about 100 feet even though all my gear was in it.

Mountain Hardware makes (or did) a sandstake. Looks like a mini parachute you bury in the sand. Snow stakes work great also, basically a 2ft I-beam with a hole at the top to carabiner your tent loop to.

These are the stakes we use. Bought a whole bunch of them from Campmor or someplace. Don't recall which size, though. They're at least 15 inch ones.

Dropped the skid to do some repairs to the 300...

I spent a pocket full of quarters at the carwash after I left the island; apparently not enough, though.

If you've got that much sand in the skid, make sure you hose out the inside of the frame really, really well.

Could I take a small 16ft pop up camper? It has it's own little generator on board. I've thought about this many times.

Yes, if you can pull it on sand w/o getting stuck.
