Tin Can Rebuild V2.0

After much frustration due to coilovers, I’ve moved on to air shocks...

I tried and tried to make the coil overs work but just couldn’t find the room. In hindsight I should’ve cut the frame behind the motor mounts and squeezed the frame tubes right up next to the block for max clearance, but that wouldn’t be the sure fire fix as the tiers got into the coils when the axle was at a steep angle.

These shock mounts were one option I tried when looking to get more angle on the coils, and it seems that they are staying for now...

After much procrastination I got the shock hoops in and am good to go now.

I’m hoping to be wheeling this thing in a little over a month at the Gulches... finish welding, bump stops, limit straps, mounting which/ more tubes, steering setup and a good pump on the airs and I’ll be ready to rock. Let see what I can do....

I’m ready to do some wheeling, it has been far too long.

The tin can has seen sunlight! It’s been quite a few months in the making, but I was able to roll it out to sweep the floor. Waiting on the column to come for my hydro steering and that will be finished!

Finish welded all links and started working on the front tube work. Shooting to pump up the shocks this week, plug the motor back in and take it for a spin at URE shortly.

Looking good man. Let me know when you get done and want to ride out to URE. I may try to ride out there with you if my tacoma is back together by then.

Might try to take it out this weekend with it being very roughly finished

Well I slacked off on pics. I’ve been working quick to finish this out before the upcoming open ride at the Flats and a Harlan trip in the month of July.

Finally was able to drive my rig out under its own power last night, still need to:
-finish up the front tube work (winch)
-get some limit straps
-Reseal the Tcase and put on some new mounts.
-a lot of small odd and ends.

Here’s one pic of my orbital/ reservoir set up. I have a crazy set of fittings and adapters due to it just being what was easy to get. I’m going to go back and clean that up shortly.

I’m running AW32 hydraulic fluid and so far have had no issue bleeding it. It seems like roughly 5 turns lock to lock, which is manageable.

Hopefully can get a shakedown run at URE soon.

Was able to get some backyard wheelin’ done today on the dirt pile left over from grading the area for our shop. Suspension handles well. I took some short lived hotrod passes through the backyard.

The front looks a little odd at the moment but I believe the front tube work and correct size tires will even it up and make it look much better. As well as the chopped fenders on the sides.

Lately the detail of my pictures is quite lacking, but I’ve been attempting to move quickly on finishing this up for the Flats this weekend. Basically, I’m looking good to finish by Thursday and make a shakedown run at URE prior to the flats trip. Today I finished up installing limitstraps, made some custom spacers for my air shocks, re mocked the fenders, slapped my 40s on, and found a hydraulic leak....... Maybe I can get better pictures on the rest of the work this week, but here’s a couple of random snaps.
Definitely happy with how stable the rig is side hilling as shown. I would like to run my final numbers through the 3-link calculator to see what things come out as. I know that the anti-squat should be just shy of 100%.

This is temporary as I want to build a couple of round, balanced, driveshafts....

More progress, I used overkill equipment to make a fairlead mount at workout out of .25x4” plate. Drilled the holes on the Bridgeport and wire EDM on the center slot. It’s way overkill but it’s the equipment at hand, so I made it happen...

Made a mount for the air filter/MAF sensor.
I may remake it because I had to cut and reweld new section in.

The wiring is a bit of a mess right now, but I think I’m going to live with it for my trip this weekend.

Here we are... final stages of the front 3link/ full hydro build. I have been working to finish for the Flats open ride and was even able to get a shakedown run to URE today. Finished out the front tube work and I think it turned out well. Some of my welds aren’t perfect, and I definitely need to take a tube welding seminar from some other builders on the forums.
None the less, I don’t fear the strength of the welds at all.

The shake down went great. We covered a good 60% of URE in roughly 2 hours. There was only one small mishap..... I had forgot to order my 3/4” locking nuts for the track bar on my steering and by the end of our run the standard nuts had worked themselves lose. Well the bolt came out and off came my track bar. Was able to locate the nut down the trail about 50 ft, put it back on, Got back to the trailer, and took her home.
I’d say we came out lucky... Now I won’t forget that on the next build....

PS- buy some dang tires!

Went back this morning and it went on up first try...... thanks for the pic and the winching. Next time we will have to ride!
Maybe I’ll have some tires then... maybe...

I enjoy getting random pics texted to me of this old shit missile still gettin it.

PS...screw the haters. Don’t buy new tires. Haha

A 2 hour downpour had just finished and I was only a hair short of going over the ledge. Even clutch dumped in 3rd and couldn’t get enough momentum going. I love beating on this thing. It’s a ridiculously fun rig.

I support this. It's gotta be pretty awesome to have something to beat the crap out of that's capable, fun, and just takes it like you paid for it :D Tons and power are awesome, but so is an angry hamster with gears!

Well how did it do?

It went awesome. The only issue I had was that I had the full hydro fittings running under the panhard and screwed them up. Luckily I had bought a lot of tractor supply stuff for this reason... drove down the road 10 mins and had the fittings. Rotated them 90*, rerouted the hoses and it was no longer an issue.

It did start smoking once on a high angle. I’m not sure if it’s normal or a valve issue or what. But it goes back to running perfectly normal right after...

Besides that, I beat on it damn good and it took it.

Looks great man, can't wait to see it work in person one of these rides.

Here is a quick video on the smoke. Any ideas would be appreciated. Could it be a valve seal? Or was I just at the perfect angle at high throttle and it’s okay? I don’t know.
