The list of which 4.0L Jeep motor will fit your Jeep

97 would need either the one piece exhaust manifold or the adapter plate to run the two piece manifold. The viper coil is better known as a Dodge caravan coil.. (Ports are way smaller on the 0331 head, which I have a good 0331 here if you need it, as well as the aforementioned coils)

Ok so I have a 2004 TJ Rubicon that my mechanic said has low compression in all cylinders and blown head gasket. If i am reading things correctly any motor from a WJ 99-04 will fit into my 04 TJ. if this is correct what do i need to do to make a 1999 WJ 4.0 work in my 04 Rubicon. Also I am swapping the transmission to an 05 43rle since the one in my jepp no longer has 3rd gear. thank you for your help

sorry for the fat finger it is a 42 rle not 43

I have an 01 XJ and I think the head is cracked. Will a 99 ZJ head work? And if not, does anyone know why?
98 zj :
Yes no. Exhaust ports differ. You can buy a adapter plate, and you'll also need to either convert to minivan/viper pack, bracket the existing coil or just stick it on the plugs (no mounting bolt boss)...

Err there wasn't a 99 zj.

99 was wj and that head is bolt on swap if it's a 0331. Just make sure it's marked tupy.

Am I mistaken that a 99 Grand Cherokee is a Wj?? I know it's compatible, but body style is different and zj (which can't be a 99) never got the 0331 heads afaik. I mean it's a semantic difference but an important difference if it's indeed a zj and not a Wj, or vice versa....

Is that correct @Jody Treadway ?

Came out of a thread in the general chat. Here's the comprehensive list of what motors will fit which Jeeps.

93-98 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ 4.0L
87-90 XJ - Renix motor, lower power output, not recommended
91-01 XJ, 93-98 ZJ, 91-95 YJ, 97-99 TJ (read 87-90 XJ section above about 0331 head issues on 00-01 XJ)

99-04 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ 4.0L
99-04 WJ, 00-06 TJ - 2002 and up were TUPY heads and did not have the cracking problems that earlier 0331 heads had. 02+ are recommended.

Thanks for the info here. Just to double check - would there be any issues with swapping a 97 ZJ into a 2001 WJ with the TUPY head?

I have an 89 yj with the 4.2 can someone please tell me if a 4.0 out of an 04 wrangler will swap and how hard would it be

Came out of a thread in the general chat. Here's the comprehensive list of what motors will fit which Jeeps.

1987-1990 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0L
Renix motor - you can use 87-90 4.0L
91-01 XJ, 93-98 ZJ, 91-95 YJ, 97-99 TJ You will need to relocate temp sender to thermostat housing from HO motor. Also need to use all your Renix accessories, distributor, flywheel/flexplate, etc. 00-01 is not recommended due to crappy head. Some people say the 0331 isn't as bad as people say. We scrap Jeeps, more than likely if we get a 0331 head Jeep in the head is cracked, well over half the high mileage 00-01 ones we get in have this problem.

1991-1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0L
87-90 XJ - Renix motor, lower power output, not recommended
91-01 XJ, 93-98 ZJ, 91-95 YJ, 97-99 TJ (read 87-90 XJ section above about 0331 head issues on 00-01 XJ)

2000-2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0L
00-01 XJ
You can also use 91-01 XJ, 93-98 ZJ, 91-95 YJ, 97-99 TJ engines, but you will need to purchase separate coil pack adapter brackets since the 00-01 is a coil pack motor and earlier engines do not have mounting provisions. It would be cheaper and easier to just find the correct 00-01 motor.

1991-1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ
87-90 XJ - Renix motor, lower power output, not recommended
91-01 XJ, 93-98 ZJ, 91-95 YJ, 97-99 TJ (read 87-90 XJ section above about 0331 head issues on 00-01 XJ)

1997-1999 Jeep Wrangler TJ/LJ
87-90 XJ - Renix motor, lower power output, not recommended
91-01 XJ, 93-98 ZJ, 91-95 YJ, 97-99 TJ (read 87-90 XJ section above about 0331 head issues on 00-01 XJ)

2000-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ/LJ
99-04 WJ, 00-06 TJ - 2002 and up were TUPY heads and did not have the cracking problems that earlier 0331 heads had. 02+ are recommended.

There you have it, please let me know if anything is wrong here. This was all gone off of by memory and experience here in the shop. I think I got it all correct but if anyone finds issue let me know and I'll update it. Also, some motors might have slight wiring differences with the temp gauge wiring because after 96 they stopped putting them in the cylinder head. You can either use a 96+ thermostat housing and extend the wire, or you can drill and tap your existing housing and extend the wires. You can also be brave and drill and tap the head. I'd rather do the housing and extend the wire and not risk it.

There are also some other differences with swapping HO motors into Renix Jeeps and the other way around, most of it is gasket related and easily remedied with using the correct gaskets.

Hope this helps some people!
I'm putting a june/96 motor in a 93, both xj, and having trouble with all the plugs matching up. What are the accessories that need changed? Can I use the harness from the 96, if so, do I have to go past the blocks under dash when pulling it out? Will wires be different when using the trans and transfer case from the 96? TIA. I'm stuck, and I don't mean in the mud !!!

Swap the intake from the 93 onto the 96.
That's all you gotta do.

86 will have either a 2.8 V6 or a 4 cyl.
This thread doesn't cover your swap in particular.

But yes, any 4.0 will fir but you'll have extensive additional work to perform.
Better off with a 4.0 eqipped Jeep to start with

Thx for your answer! Mine was v6, but someone put him 2.3 ford diesel. No transmition changes. Saying its underpowered is like saying nothing... In your opinion any easier option? One of gm motors?

If you have the 2.8 the only thing that bolts up is the 3.1 or 3.4 which are gm 60 deg v6's like the 2.8.

Thx a lot, i'll be looking for original 2.8 v6 to make it ori 90% but here in Poland theres no way at the moment to get one, even when looking at gmc parts distributors
