I am thinking of buying a remote starter for my mother-in-law as a christmas gift. She just got a new car that has an alarm, and a key that locks/unlocks the doors, rolls down the windows and pops the truck. Does anyone have any first hand exp. with these? I've heard that sometimes these systems can stick and burn up the starter...is this true? If anyone has one on their car please feel free to include what you like/dislike about it. thanks

My friend has it on his TJ and so far it has worked great for him, no problems at all. It's nice for those cold days where u want to warm it up before you get in.

I remember last winter I saw on TV News, Charlotte I think, that local LE was giving tickets to people who were doing this. Said to cut down on crime.
So, might wanna check into it before you do this.

a good quality unit will shut off the truck the minute the brake pedal is depressed and also has anti grin circuitry to protect the starter.

i have had mine for years and love it. since then I installed one on my fathers car last christmas

x2. Had mine for a year or so on my 2007 Titan and like it alot especially in the mornings. I've never had any issues at all. Doors still stay locked even when its remote running until you're ready to jump into a toasty vehicle!

Mine is a Viper brand installed by Freemans car and audio on South Blvd in Charlotte. Had an alarm installed for another $100 within the same unit......made sense really once they were splicing and poking around in the wiring....

Love mine on the Dodge.. Mine is made by "Galaxy" or something like that.. they have good write-ups around the 'net.

a starter isn't something for you to do blindly poking around with a test light.. have the wiring diagram handy.

My 98 4runner has the dealer installed TDS keyless with remote start. It will run for 10 minutes. You have to put the key in and switch in to on and press the brake to stop the remote start up mode, if you touch the brake pedal without the key it turns off. The only thing I don't like is the hazard likes blink.

mine is a viper with remote start and car alarm with 2 way paging system. it lets me know just how the theif set it off.

2way paging system?
Can you make your truck talk like 'KNIGHT RIDER'?

I put one in my truck and love it! It has a great range of about 500' in an open area. It will also unlock the truck if hooked up. I got mine few years ago from BJ's it was only $39.00

Any thing made by Directed Electronics is good, but it boils down to the install. DO NOT USE T TAPS TO INSTALL. Solder all of your connections, and use high quality tape to insulate. I would def. recommend seeing a local shop to install this. I install mobile electronics for a living and some of these newer cars with oem immobilzers are getting pretty difficult. But as long as it is installed correctly with the tach hooked up and wires not ttapped you should be good, ive never had one to damage a vehicle in 8 years of installing.

Thats because Charlotte has a no idle law, because of smog

alright thanks for the input everyone, I think I am going to go ahead and get one. Is there anyone around the statesville, hickory area that would like to make some money on the side installing one?

I guess their acquisition of Clifford a number of years ago did them well... DEI was cookie-cutter crap in the 90's.

But yeah, the installer is 80% of the final product...

Make sure her car is an Automatic. :D

when they first came out, a buddy had it n his Saturn witha 5 speed. he said, "Watch this" and he cranked it up to have it run into my other buddies New Truck. He wasn't impressed.

There are starters compatible with 5-speeds nowadays that don't require elaborate methods to ensure it's in neutral...

Best buy and the like will install it for free if you buy it from them. I had one installed on my ZJ a few years back and love it. It's fun to start it up and scare people.

Best buy tried to stick me for an additional $200 for install..

But honestly, I had NO intention of letting them scotch-lock install the whole thing anyway.

NOOOO dont take it to best buy, you may pay a few more dollars at a specialist but it will be well worth it. Most installers at best buy are more scared of working on your car than you are. A good remote starter with immobilizer bypass installed shouldnt be over 350 anywere!!!
