Opinions of the Jeep Liberty

Found one for the wife and now have some issues. We paid for it and drove home yesterday. It had just gotten a new battery and we drove it for a day or two with a dealer tag while waiting for the pcm finish it's loop and allow it to be inspected...after it finished its loop and passed inspection at dealer we came back to morganton to do the dmv stuff. Well it had been fine but after going in a store and restarting it ...it began to shake right after crank up. It did smooth out mostly but a light came on and code is P0300
From what I've read that means random misfires. I called the dealer and he says just change the plugs. Went to a couple shops and they all say it could be blown head gasket. There is no white smoke, not loosing any coolant, not gaining on dipstick, not running hot. One mechanic said for me to wait til it's cold and crank it this morning and see if it runs rough or smooth. He said any anti freeze that leaks onto the pistons would cause it to run very rough. I cranked it this am and it is still running pretty smooth with just a slight bit of a miss. Does this mean I can rule out the head gasket and look at something else?
I thought about changing plugs but one mechanic said if it was plugs then there would be a P0300 with P0301/P0303... for the bad plugs

What else can cause a P0300 code (random misfire ) besides a blown head gasket.

Ever since we started driving it I have felt like it was missing a lick. When driving normally it fells like it's kind of putting along but when accelerating harder it seems pretty smooth. Basically a little rough when low rpm and fine at mid high rpm.

I dunno?

This is exactly what my daughters did. We put a motor in it and before long the replacement motor started doing the same thing. I sold it for $1700 and was happy to get rid of it. However, I have to admit that I liked to drive it. I liked how it road and I liked my position in the driver's seat. I still long for one when I see them for sale but there is no way I would ever buy another. I think my Dodge Ram has the same motor in it.

You have a chance, they fucked up by letting you drive it to clear the codes so it would pass inspection. Technically they are not supposed to have vehicle available for sale or test drives until it passes inspection. Did they have it inspected or did you? From a legal and moral standpoint you bought it as is, man up an accept it. I always give my customers option of taking a vehicle to their mechanic for independent inspection. Everybody assumes we have fucking crystal balls to know everything about every car we are selling. Do your homework, get a ppi, even then shit breaks. We offer warranties if you want to buy. My favorite line is.......,Customer calls 2 months after purchase and says "I know I bought it as is but.....

Are you guys going to warranty your rig 2 weeks, 2 months , 2 years after you sell it.....hell no. At what point is this liberty your vehicle? Do your due diligence, get independent ppi and read dealers Google reviews before purchase.

Leak down test will prove if it's head gasket, period end of sorry.

I'm with @Jody Treadway . More likely an injectors, plugs, coil... Especially if you are Not losing coolant. If you were losing coolant, possibly different story. But in my experience, it's as is, but the dealer will try help you get it right, especially since you just bought it. At least the ones I do work for will try to help you out in that time span, as is or not. See if they make it right or work with you to make it right, it's good on their name. Of course, if it's a crap hole dealer they don't care and they are already screwed. But a good used car dealer will try to keep their name good. Don't take long for word to get out and then they aren't selling cars.

That's just my 2 bits.

***ive never owned one***

i looked into these before i bought my wk. i really liked them and everything i read about their off road capabilites was really positive. but i kept coming back to the head issues.

i went with the WK because i was running out of time and couldnt find a CRD liberty i was in love with.

ended up deciding to keep it after doing a thorough check on the head gaskets. I changed out the plugs and a couple had a little goober on the hook which "I think" caused the missfire's. After plugs it ran much better and idle became really smooth.
When I get a new car I always check the frt/rear diffs, trans and t-case for levels and condition. This time I went to snappy lube to have them check the levels...The tech there pulled a 4-5" bolt out the side of trans and dropped the reverse fork. They wanted to try and fix it there but I demanded the driveshafts be removed and it be hauled to a trans specialist. They did what I asked and the trans was fixed.
Believe it or not due to the MPG's my wife wants to sell it and keep her Yaris. Say's she likes the Liberty but can't get used to the mpg's as her Yaris gets 36MPG.
I say "Whatever"
I'll get it listed here in the next day or so. Thanks again for the forums knowledge and advice.
