Looking at the 1500 mega-cab, I notice it has the solid front axle and 8-lug wheels like the 2500. But only has a towing capacity of 7300 lbs, as opposed to a 2500 quad cab's 8700 lb towing capacity. But you can get the 4.10 gearing and it bumps to 8300 on the 1500 mega cab

  1. So what makes the 1500 mega-cab different from the 2500 quad cab (besides the price and ability to drop a $6000 cummins option in the 2500)
  2. Is the 10.50 rear axle in the 1500 mega-cab the same axle thats in the 2500?
  3. Does the 1500 mega-cab sit on the same frame and springs as the 2500?

What I'm HOPING is that the 1500 mega-cab has a softer ride (unloaded) than the 2500 (quad or mega) but can tow damn near the same. My ceiling is $39,000 so the cummins isn't even an option for the most part, thats why the questions on a 1500 mega-cab. Never would have considered it had I not seen the 8 lug wheels and solid front axle under it at the dealer

It should have a better ride, looks like payload is much lower on the 1500.

According to Dodge, the curb weights are similar between the 1500 mega and the 2500 mega, so I'm not sure about the frame. The frame USED to be alot different (taller) between the 1500/2500.

I'd be willing to bet it's the same rear axle, unless they went SF on the 1500, but I doubt it.

P.S. I priced up a 2500 mega cab...you can do eet on the CTD, and even have some options, if you do the hand-shaker.

Even gotcha the tow mirrors, adjustable pedals, power rear slider window, LSD diff, fog lights, block heater ($9? cheap bastids), auto dimming inside mirror (love mine), "premium" split bench seats, and the leather wrapped wheel..

Invoice price - $38,940. :D

WOW..I gotta explore that more

With a best friend, the lead mechanic at Cummins Atlantic, I'd catch immortal hell for NOT getting the CTD

I am pretty sure that the frame on the 1500 mega cab is the same as the 2500. The springs however, are softer, so it should ride a bit better, especially with the wheel base. We have a mega cab 2500 cummins at work and it rides noticably better than a 2500 quad cab short bed.
