Over the last few years we have been leaning more and more towards wanting to tow our TJ to and from the trails. We are committed to it now and were recently discussing purchasing a tow rig, but began to think about the '87 J20 we have now. We don't need 2 trucks, don't want to get rid of the J20, and believe the J20 can be a capable tow rig so we are looking into having some work done there.
We are looking for recommendations of shops we can farm out some of the work we need done (possibly all). We are locating in Moyock NC, but a shop need not be in this area (especially if they know amc). Your input is appreciated.
Current J20 status:
AMC 360
Auto tranny tf727
D44/D60
6” spring lift on 35” tires and 16” rims (new 2013)
Initial Work List:
1 - Rebuild tranny – operates fine now, but leaks after it sits for a bit. Want to make sure it’s in good shape for towing.
2 – 4bbl carb (auto choke)/intake
3 – headers/exhaust
Other Stuff:
1 - A/C!!!!
2 – possibly regear
3 – rear air springs
4 – possible rear drum-to-disk brake conversion
