JK and K5 build threads Bc you can never have too many toys

Gaining more clearance. Need to come up with a bumpstop pad design and filler plates for the frame. I’ll likely do fish plates on the outside of the frame.

The more I look at stuff with the brake caliper mounted on the axle. The more in thinking about doing coilovers on the rear. My main reasoning is because I can’t find a spring to keep it this height, and still use all of a 14” travel shock. I need to gusset all the link mounts on the axle side. I can hang bumpstop pads off the back of the axle at frame width and be kosher clearing everything. But packaging a smooth body shock without relocating the bump stop is gonna be a challenge that none of the options I foresee are attractive to me.

My only wondering is with how high I’ve got this axle at full bump, if I do plate shock towers like I did on the rear, they will be 15-16” above the frame rail. I don’t want them to fold in, I feel like me having to Frenched them in the frame rail would help that from happening. My wheel wells will need to be remade most likely. This just sucked up a lot more funds. I’ve been on the fence about picking up more joints so I can have them at both ends of the links. Mainly Bc I feel like I’ll be selling myself short.

Worthless without pics right? Custom coolovers

You'll definitely have to french the frame to keep them from going past vertical on droop flex. Depending on the wheel/tire combo you may run into tire clearance issues as well.

You could flip the caliper to the front and hang the coilovers off the back and utilize that french notch you already have and build a hoop for the shock to mount on.

I’m looking at running a 2” spacer mainly to get the width closer to the front SD 60 track width. That’ll help with shock to tire clearance a lot. The frenched in rear shock mounts I did already, will likely get cut off flush and boxed in to make them go away. They aren’t deep enough for coilovers, and no where near tall enough either. I’ll do bump cans mounts, but likely the aluminum dummy slugs for right now. Every way I look at it 15-16” above the frame I feel like I’ll need to tie them into each other and/or cage. I was trying hard not to do that, not dive into the cage build just to mount up some shocks.

And really I want to drive this thing so damn bad. Main reason why I wanted to keep it coils and shocks so it would be easier, if I wanted to limit it to 10-11” of travel, this wouldn’t be an issue. But no I like going pretty much full retard on stuff.

Just gonna post my Snapchat story so far this morning. I’ve got to drive it to my moms for thanksgiving.

Well that was way less eventful, I’ve got a upper radiator hose I’ve been waiting to just blow Bc it’s got a decent gash in it. Still hasn’t.

How'd it cruise along on those 39.5s? I always have enjoyed striking out on a jaunt with some knobby bias ply tires. Especially after they warm up, get round again, and then you can just listen to the hum of the lugs grabbing air and you're running down the road.

Said fuck it and ran the 38.5s. It needs overdrive but made the trip pretty well.

Don't you have/aren't you looking for an NV4500?

I’ve been sort of looking but I’ve got a real hard on to get my Jeep out of the garage. Looking at hopefully finishing up the rear suspension in the next week or two. Then starting the front. I’ve got most the link materials for the front. But still need to pick up a bunch more stuff for the axle itself. Along with steering linkages, heims for the steering. I’m sure I’ll have some frame mods to clear 7” of uptravel with that 60 and this belly height. I’m excited I’m working on the weekends on my own stuff.

Got my axle storage cart made. Jake (croatan kid) stopped by and we went out for some mexican food. He pretty much convinced me I need a 2500HD to SAS with a WFO kit, lol.

He does that!

It’s also pretty good for my leftover tubing. Still want to take 8” out of the sides so it doesn’t stick out as far. I need an actual shop for this bullshit.

I figured out how I wanted to gusset the main plate/upper control arm mount. The spring perched will go away, but I do plan on tying the bump stop pad that will be on the back of the axle tube into the lower control arm mount. I might figure out a away to to the truss to the control arm mount but I really need to make the shock mount there before I do the bump stop pad or truss tie in.

So the wheel spacers came in, and it gives me a total boner. Goal is to finish up frame side stuff this weekend. Then finish axle side stuff if I can get to it. Gonna leave the spring perches on it for now. So I can turn it around and get this front axle half way under there. I wanna drive this POS so damn bad. But she she thicker than a snickers. And I’m so happy to be using a factory a TJ tank skid and going with 2 1/2-3” of stretch out back even with that Barnes4wd 13 bolt diff cover. Because I’d had to sink more money in a tank or a welder so I can build one right now. I want to drive it so damn bad.

so yeah that’s ride height on 39.5s. But now going to coilovers out back and air bumps. Redoing the truss still trying to decided on the design I want to go with, I’ve narrowed it down to 2. I’ll decided tomorrow after 5 when I can work on it for 2 hours or so.

Pick dump of stuff I’ve been working on since the last update. Did a bunch of random stuff to a friends 4Runner, finishing up a SAS on an f150. Got a little more of my truss done. Did a 85-91 KP dana 60 build for someone. Finally have all coilovers and bumps for my Jeep. Still got a bunch of work to knock out for some friends but hoping I can squeeze in the summer semester and get back in school. Kind of burnt out working on other folks stuff.

Well next major project I’m doing for someone is putting 1 tons under a Tahoe. But I’m trying to get my Jeep as somewhat of a roller over the next week or two, need to finish the rear truss, and get the framerails finished up before I do the coilover mounts for the rear. I’ve got a bumper build in doing for a guy a bumper build in doing for a guy next month and then plan on stripping down the Tahoe.

I got the upper link mounts cut out and welded onto the “back bone” of the truss. I need to drill my holes for the pinion support piece and get that done, then all the gussets for the upper control arm mounts. I also need to come up with the inside of the truss. If I want make it fancy or skelotized to test out my own skills. Few frame patches where I had to notch then coilover mounts and bump stop mounts. I need to go dive back into the coilover bible and decided on a spring rate to get my desired ride height. I’m hoping I can delay putting sway bars on it by having the dual rate stops setup ideally for 7” up and 7” down travel on the shocks. I’m just ready to drive my Jeep again it’s been apart for too long. And one of these days I’ll get the k5 setup for a nv4500 and do the front shock mounts/frameplates/bumper/bumpstops and inner fenders. Just want my Jeep back on the road first because stuff takes me for ever.

I think I want to cut out the shaded areas when I make that piece. Should be able to do it today if I don’t get side tracked with anything else.

Got this part cut out and still needs a little more fitting. Hopefully I can knock out the front part of the truss this afternoon. If I can get most of this heavy tacked and get the frame filler plates done and get everything cycled and cleared this weekend I’ll be happy.

need to cut out the 3/8” top plate I’ll use to bolt the pinion support to the truss and then cut that welded one in have. Also got the front side of the truss done. Now to figure out how I want to gusset between the upper link mounts and burn everything in.
