Had a good 78 short block i planned to swap into the 84 cj that i I picked up. Pulling things apart and I notice that there aren't bosses on the early block for the power steering bracket. Anyone know of a fix for this, or am I stuck using the newer block. That will involve a fair amount more money and I'm not interested in that.

I had a 77 or 78 6 cly. I bought for parts. Complete & running, but a rust bucket that had rolled. Which 6, I can't say, but it had PS. I don't remember how it was installed, only it was Factory.

Thanks. After speaking with another friend, he thinks that the one I have may have started as a 232. I have to move on to find another. The timing cover is different as well.

This sounds very familiar, but it’s probably been 25 years since I messed with it. Seems like when I put PS on my 77 CJ 258, I scrapped, or possibly only used part of the 80s 258 serpentine belt bracketry I scored, then also used a pump and maybe another bracket from an 80s 4-banger, which was v-belt like my CJ. I think I did have to deal with the different or lack of bosses.
I haven’t logged on jeepsunlimited.com in years, but I may have even posted my swap observations over there. Or maybe I’ll pop the hood and see what I have, once it warms up.

Check the number on the side of the block. The letter in the number will tell you if its a 232 or a 258. Just going off of memory here and my books are in a very cold shop right now so I maybe alittle off but I think:
A=232
B=258 one barrel
C=258 two barrel.

It just seems Odd, that whenever PS became available, it wouldn't have been all All the engines. Other than a ploy to get you to up-grade to the 258. I owned a 1972, CJ-5, 258. Every HD option was Ordered on it, but there was No PS, or PB.

You can see the difference in the pics. The first one is the newer engine I have. I dug through pics on Google today. Learned that there were several different castings.
