98 XJ Engine Swap - What year 4.0's interchange?

Wondering what year 4.0's I can swap into my 98 XJ. Can I run an older OBDI engine, if I just swap over all my accessories and intake/exhaust manifolds? Any differences in the actual longblocks themselves between the different year 4.0's?

EDIT: Current 4.0 is knocking, which is why I need to know what I can swap in. Here's a video of the current engine running.

Go 91-06. Pre-91 are not High output. The direct, exactly the same, replacement would be 96-99, but the 00-06 would be no issue as well. Talking about up to 2006 TJ and up to 04 WJ 4.0's.
