When asked about government shutdown closures, Jeff Zients, deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget said today that, "National parks, national forests and the Smithsonian Institution would all be closed. The NIH Clinical Center will not take new patients, and no new clinical trials will start," he added in a roll call of expected agency closings.

We talked to someone today at URE and they said if they closed they wouldn't close until monday, if we drive all the way up there and they close the gates, I will have a hard time not wheeling it anyway, and be madder than hell.

got this from cnn's website:

"Closed/ceased Interior & Environment National Parks All national parks would close at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday. Parks that have actual hours, like the St. Louis Arch or Washington Monument, just won't reopen. At parks where people camp, gates will be closed so no one can enter. Those in the park will be given 24 hours to leave. Parks like Yellowstone and Gettysburg, which are large and contain public roads, will be passable but all gates and visitor centers will be locked and closed. Most park employees will not report to work. Law enforcement will remain to protect parks and the public."

My club, CTB, ride is Saturday. CTB member, Granny said that his old, reliable sources indicate that the trails will be open this weekend. IF they close, it will be next week before they do so.

From a very reliable source... Uwharrie is safe for this weekend. Next week may be another story.
WOW! you must have a express carrier pigeon! Thanks Don and JC. Again I will NOT be at the DP. I WILL be at the big mudhole at the Art Lilly CG and parking lot. Just trying to help.

Why would they close the Park. The Rangers are never out there anyway? This whole Gov. shut down is dumb IMO.

Have you really been there??? I was there on Sunday and thanked 2 rangers at the double parkinglot and saw 2 different ones out patroling that same day.

ok i may be missing something but is the park going to be open or closed this weekend?

The park will be open this weekend.

I gotta say, that is by far the most activity from them I have ever heard about, figure for opening weekend though that is to be expected. I'm glad they were around patrolling though, figure if the stupid people see the rangers maybe they won't be drinking and driving on the trails for fear of the checkpoint.

OK so the website www.uwharrieinfo.us says that due to a fire all trails below forest road 516 and the area west to the lake and south of forest road 576 would be closed. That was for april 7th. I am leaving in the AM planning to stay at Lilly. I just hope its open when I get there.

Can anyone confirm that the fire closure is over?

The trails closed due to the 1000 acre burn are now open again.
Here is my reply from the other thread...

If there is a shut down the campgrounds will be closed but the trails will remain open. Reservations made at the campgrounds prior to shut down will be handled by the reservation company, but the gates to arrowhead, kings mtn point, group camp and badin WILL be closed.

You do realize Uwharrie is a National Forrest, not a Park, right?

But national forests are being affected the same as national parks.

Are they? Cite a reference. The quote from CNN referenced Parks only and the Parks will close at 12:01 Saturday but URE said it won't close until next week...

So, where is your info coming from and who is right? Post up the info if you have it!

Thanks Eli.

Yes the government made the agreements and is not shutting down! I agree this is great news.
