xj transmission return line

What you should have is an AW4. The return line should be the top one on the radiator. Follow them out of the trans. the front line is out and the rear line is return.
 
i would actually suggest you put the cooler on the send line before the radiator cooler. you dont wantyou to overcool the tranny fluid going back in. if its before the cooler in the radiator it will at least keep it at normal operating temperature and the transmission will keep at itts normal behavior. either way the aw4 is a tank. if you burn up a clutch pack in a aw4 then..... your getting ready to spend alot of money on a rebuild and everythign else inline with it.
 
I'd disconnect it from the radiator and plug the holes. An external cooler will be plenty to cool it. All the radiator cooler will do if keep it nice and Hot!

For what its worth, I have a stock cooler (maybe 4"x8" or 4"x12", whatever the stock tow cooler is) in addition to the rad cooler.. my IR thermometer reads 140 on the pan, and like 110 on the cooler.. of course the inlet side of the radiator is only 170, outlet side like 120
 
under a heavy load tranny fluid can get much hotter than coolant in the radiator. if you put the cooler after the radiator not only are you putting potenitally 250 degree fluid in already 200 degree coolant but your also heating up the coolant to a higher temp and putting more strain on the cooling system and motor AND then running it through the other cooler to potentially drop the fluid below the reccommended operating temperature.. if the cooler is before the radiator then it will cool the tranny fluid to acceptable level, then when it goes through the oem cooler it will either cool it further to the engine operating temperature or warm it up to operating temperature. putting the cooler before the radiator will also prevent any added strain on the cooling system and potentially overheating the motor. and yes it does do very well as i ran my cherokee towing 4000 lbs and the factory cooler only and ive towed it with the aux cooler installed. without the cooler i was running 230. with the cooler i was running at 200.
 
older jeeps arent like the new stuff where you can just run the tranny cooler only and have a cute icon come on when your tranny either overheats or have a digital guage to tell you what the temperature is... unless you go through the trouble of actually mounting one. the only thing jeep has is ....boom...

Here is how it works, your trans is operating in the 250deg range,the fluid goes into the radiator and is cooled down to engine temp(195-210),it then exits the radiator and enters the aux cooler and is cooled again before returning to the trans.
That is the way it goes,any different is wrong. For every 20 deg you lower the temp of an automatic,you double it's life.
 
whatever floats the boat dude. you have your opinion and experience and i have my own. im not going to start a debate on this as it is a forum and ultimately it is his choice. the whole purpose of this is to help and make suggestions. now i put my .02 and you put your .02. don't be calling me out in a rude manor as we are all adults and its just not necessary. not like its a big job anyway to switch the hoses on the cooler.
 
I wasn't being rude,(or trying to be). It is not opinion,it is fact.
I can safely say I have installed hundreds of coolers.
You are right,this is supposed to be a thread to help him put his cooler on. I was just trying to make sure he does it properly.
