street legal atv

From my understanding it has to have all functions of a registered motor vehicle except it will carry motorcycle insurance and motorcycle inspection. Buddy of mine had an old 3wheeler years ago that was set up to be street legal at one time by the previous owners.
 
I was told here that if it was for farm uses it had to have the same equipment as a tractor. Including a SMV sign on it

Not true.
ATVs have been required to be serialized and titled by law since 99.

2 fold issue, #1 emissionss related data gathering. #2 safety recall tracking

That may be true in SC but in NC you get a certificate of orgin thats all. That is not a title. I have owned a few ATVs here in NC all were purchased new from dealers.

All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) are usually manufactured for off road use. The vehicles generally do not meet the normal DOT safety standards. The manufacturers state that even if conforming tires were place on the motorcycle, that the suspensions and other design features are meant for low-pressure tires, so placing different tires on the vehicle does not allow it to meet safety standards.
A title or license cannot be issued unless an inspector's report is received confirming that the vehicle is equipped for road use and meets all DOT safety standards.

ATVs are not titled in NC.

Last 2 I bought IN NC included titles *shrug*
 
Is your title a SC title or a NC certificate of orgin? The certificate of orgin looks like a title but is not a title. It is not required in the resale of a ATV or dirtbike. If you sell a used ATV in NC its no different than selling a washing machine. No title. No taxes, no tags. You can insure one against libility, fire, and theft. Insurance is required to ride them on the road in WV. Riding on the road is illegal in NC period.
 
I've seen hunting Quads with arizona lic plates around my hometown in CO. Parked in spots on the street. Not sure if the local fuzz bothered them, but it's an idea. I'm figuring you won't be riding it down I 40, but maybe buy one there, lic it and insure it there. Just a thought.
 
nc doesnt give titles from my understand as well... i know a guy that had a raptor legalized but he bought it from maryland and transfered the title and then set it up with turn signals, street tires, wanna say horn, license plate bracket with working light, and mirrors... said it was a pain in the ass but he did it

My cousin in Lumberton tried to get his Honda 650R dirtbike street legal for years. He got a horn, dot tires, lights, etc. He went through all that for nothing and still couldn't get a plate, but I forget the reason. I think it had to do with fact that he couldn't get a street legal title? He later traded for a KTM 525 EXC that he could title, and did.

I have gone, and still go with the slow moving vehicle sign. I will usually put the sprayer on the back and keep under 20 MPH on the road. I also have a magnetic battery operated caution light that I stick on their too (from either Agri Supply or John Deere, I forget). Then when I get to where I want to ride, I drop it off at the edge of the field and let it rip.

However, try to get away with that at somewhere like Uwharrie and you will still get a ticket because it's obviously not for farm use there. Around home, it all depends on the officer that stops you but you could probably get away with it.
 
I'm developing a STREET LEGAL - 3 wheel ATV (2 front 225 wheels and 1 rear 225) which is going to be produced overseas, and they will be legal in all states (because you can register those as motorcycles). Project is expected to be done in about a month and a half!!!

the problem is the MSO, its not a title in the taggable sense. it will state "off road use only" that will stop the DMV dead. The KTM's come with an MSO, that does not state "offroad use only" the DMV doesn't have a problem converting that MSO to a real taggable title.
Now, if your MSO does not say "offroad use only" you may be able to get it past thee DMV. Then youve got to get it inspected....

There is your definitive answer / from the last page... IF you can get an inspector to sign off on it you can do this.

I was looking at a beach trip this year and wondered about golf carts. Same exact thing...if they are inspected and signed off on, you can get a tag for them and operate them on the road.

You WOULD have issues with staying at "minimum" speeds on certain roads...

I believe you will need to follow the same rules as the motorcycle (and that is the route the inspector will be taking), so you are looking at lights, turn signals, brake lights....prob tires and wheels will need to be DOT approved, etc.

I think Michael Bowen (Tacoma747) was looking into this for his little buggy?

I would like to do it just to piss off the local cops when they pulled me over and found it was legal.:flipoff2:
