Doe Mountain Recreation Area is slated to open in April 2013 according to Johnson County, TN Mayor Larry Potter who I just spoke with on the phone.

Doe Mountain is an 8,600 acre property that has been acquired by the state of TN and will be managed by Johnson County for outdoor recreation. OHV access, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and more will be offered on the mountain.

The Doe Mountain Recreation Board Of Authority has been created and a charter, bylaws, officers, logo, seal, website all approved. Mapping of the mountain is being done now in preparation for a spring 2013 opening.

The terrain is similar to the Callalantee OHV property that used to be an OHV park outside of Mountain City, TN.

A visitor center similar to the Black Mountain OHV park in Evarts, KY is planned and permits will be on a daily or yearly basis. At least two access points are planned with the main visitor center being off of Highway 67 (Doe Valley Rd) and a secondary entrance off of Highway 167.

It sure sounds like it by looking at the map.

Man, this is great news!

I remember wheeling at Crackers Neck back in 2003 and 2004 before it was closed down.

This is truly good news! Nice to hear about an opening rather than a closing.

thats great! i never got to go to Callalantee, but im glad to hear there is going to be somewhere a little closer to me again!

yea it'd be nice to have a place a little closer to home.
used to ride crackers neck (before it closed) and callalantee on
a regular basis.
thanks for keepin us up to date!

Nice! I loved Callantee... only got there a couple of times. Looking foward to this...

Awesome! Another spot to hit next year!

No. Crackers Neck is located between 421 and 167 south of Mountain City. Doe Mountain is between 167 and 67 sw of Mountain City.

Do you have any idea whether it will be run/policed more like black mtn/harlan or more along the lines of uwharrie? I remember back in the days of Tellico, the rangers/police on the Tennessee side were not shy about roadblocks and handing out tickets for everything. I'm not talking about alcohol either, more about ridiculous vehicle violations.

:bounce: awesome! great! fabulous! wonderful! CANT WAIT!:bounce:

Did I mention I was excited about this?!

Thanks JC!

No idea. County run = county law enforcement?

The only thing I remeber from the earlier discussion of this place was that the trails would be "scenic". I don't recall anything about them being any kind of challenge? I hope the place developes and has some challenging trails. Is there no one here that has ridden the place on an ATV or the like before?
